While visiting Maui on vacation, our 18-month-old suddenly developed nonstop coughing and wheezing at 4 a.m. on a Sunday. He was struggling to breathe, and we were very worried. The hotel suggested a doctor on call, but we went straight to Maui Memorial Hospital ER and I am so glad we did. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredible. Within five minutes we were checked in and in a room. Nurse Aaron was so attentive, helping get his oxygen monitor set up and keeping us calm. Then Dr. Lee came in, and I immediately felt at ease. He knew exactly what to do, explained that Hawaii’s environment can trigger allergies differently, and started treatment right away. Thanks to him, our son received the right medicine and breathing treatments, and before long he was smiling and happy again. We didn’t have to cancel the rest of our trip, and I’m beyond grateful to God, Dr. Lee, Nurse Aaron, and the team at Maui Memorial for taking such amazing care of our little boy.

Went in at labor and delivery for a scary fall at 25 weeks pregnant and got checked out promptly. Dr. Bullock and nurse Lindsey were amazing and attentive. I felt truly taken care of! Super grateful to them.

I’m writing this review for the part of me who previously felt terrified to speak up for herself in fear of retaliation. I was a client at Nova Luna from the ages of 15-18 years old, and I am now 21. My mother remains a current client within the program. I felt pressured to stay and was discouraged when I wanted to seek other support. I was given the perception that the program was my only way to heal and that the clinical director was better than any other clinician I could find elsewhere. I felt saddened whenever she spoke poorly about other professionals/programs in the area who others have had positive experiences with. Towards the end of my time at Nova Luna, many of the therapists/clinicians resigned and the clinical director was seeing my mother and I for individual/family therapy as there were no other therapists working within the program. I was not allowed to remain friends with clients who discharged themselves without “graduating,” which saddened me as I built many friendships there. Further, I felt my confidentiality as well as other clients’ confidentiality wasn’t taken seriously compared to how I see my confidentiality being taken now. After an accumulated list of events, I took a leap of faith soon after turning 18 to seek a trauma-informed therapist who I feel safe with. Three years have passed. Since leaving, I have a greater ability to advocate for myself and have grown more than I ever thought possible. I have learned that there are many paths to life and one therapist doesn’t have the power or capacity to be the perfect fit for every client. I have learned that nothing scary will happen if I choose to contact people that I wish to connect with. I have learned that I can bring my thoughts, feelings, and vulnerabilities to therapy and have it be received without an alarming reaction. I have learned that some people may tell me what they believe is best for me, although at the end of the day, it is me who is living my life and I have the ability to choose who witnesses and supports me through whatever phase I’m in. Most importantly, I can confidently identify what a safe therapeutic relationship is and no longer question if I deserve anything less. As a therapist, you leave an imprint on each client that walks through your door. Additionally, you have the power to choose what kind of imprint you wish to have. There were many wonderful moments at Nova Luna and I will forever be grateful for what I have learned there and for the people I met. However, there were also things that needed improvements towards the end of my time within the program that I have been too afraid to share. I wholeheartedly believe that it’s important for everyone to find support they feel is best for them, whether it's at Nova Luna, another program, or working with a therapist in Private Practice. I wish you the absolute best on your journey towards recovery + healing.

The well educated counselors and skilled therapists at ‘O’hana Makamae approach recovery differently from other drug and alcohol treatment centers. Clients are seen as individuals and are treated as valued members of a family. They Recognize no “one size” recovery plan works for everyone. Treatment plans provide life skills used in building individual success stories. Is ‘Ohana Makamae for everyone... absolutely not. It’s purpose is to be a hand that leads those suffering with substance use disorders out of the darkness into the light.... while embracing Hawaiian values, traditions and heritage. I enjoyed everyday working with the clinical staff and witnessing lives change. I’d most definitely return in the future.

If you are serious about getting better, this program is great! God is great! A BIG MAHALO!!! to all the staff and people that have graduated from this program that continue to visit to encourage, support and share their testimony with people coming into the program.

I was homeless and addicted on the streets of Honolulu for more than a year and a half. I did not successfully complete the entire program. The tools that I had obtained at SITC has kept me sober since September 7, 2017. I now work and reside at the Coolfont Resort in Berkeley Springs West Virginia. I was deemed untreatble and was one of the worst cases that was reported. If I could tell SITC anything it would be thank you for the tough love and that miracles happen.

I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given there. I will take with me everything I learned there. The staff is incredible. There is not a better treatment out there I think which sounds biast though that's how I feel. I learned so much in the short time I was there. Forever they have left a mark on my soul. The teachers ( what I call them ) and my counselor were brutal and honest and I couldn't have asked for better people.

A heartfelt thank you to the team at Queen’s Medical Center My husband had a serious accident in the ocean and broke a vertebra. We had to go to Queen’s Medical Center in the middle of the night – and from the very beginning, everything was handled with absolute professionalism. The nurses and doctors were incredibly kind, caring, and helpful. My husband received all the necessary examinations promptly, thoroughly, and without any hassle. A very special thanks goes to Dr. Afshari, who took a lot of time to explain the findings to us and supported us with great expertise and compassion during this difficult time. I had the most scariest experience while on vacation, anaphylactic reaction to lord knows what. The quick response of the first responders was Excellent! They reacted quickly, medicated me appropriately and quick took me to Queen hospital. I was treated with empathy, care and dignity by the night staff: Nurse Andrew and Dr. Bowman went above and beyond and approached my care with genuine intention! Thank you two for your amazingly “calling”!

So much to say, but I just want to express how truly grateful I am. Thank you to the amazing team at Queen’s Hospital—Dr. Deptula, Dr. Marui, their entire staff, and the ICU nurses. Your care, kindness, and support made me feel like I was going to be okay. This feels like the beginning of a new journey in my life, and I’m so thankful to all of you for helping me get here.
