Everything is done in a timely fashion. I don’t have to call but once to get an appointment, it’s easy to access my therapist and so far the customer service has been great. I like my therapist she’s thoughtful and listens to what I say. She has helped me with sleeping meds, which I really appreciate.

I completed this program back in 2008. Absolutely wonderful doctors, councilors, and staff members. The patients I witnessed coming through those doors, came in broken and really sick from a wide variety of medical issues (mostly addiction related). By the time they left, they were healthy, happier, and had sufficient tools to make a full recovery. I was young and impressionable when I entered their program. The individual care and the loving nature of the staff made the environment warm, comfortable, & safe. I was impressed with how honesty was received there. It was received with open hearts, without fear of judgment or negative criticism. The staff recognized each of us as unique individuals that held great value to society. So many (if not everyone) of us felt worthless and hopeless for the way our culture looks at those who suffer from the progressive and life threatening disease of addiction. Their respect stood out to me and is the primary reason I found the courage to change my life. They also understood the deep suffering that addiction causes and went to any length to help us feel accepted and cared for. The medical professionals employed there taught us how to live a life of gratitude with purpose. To this day I am still eternally grateful for my experience there. I would recommend River Place Counciling Center in Elk River MN to anyone who is seeking to heal and recover. Doesn’t matter from what either. What matters is that you show up. A quick tidbit: I learned all of facts in my journey there. One of them is that our culture is based on materialism and individualism. Which both are the enemies of our soul and the common denominator of our brokenness. It creates division, isolation, and fear. Once I truly understood that, I was never the same. I continued my journey in AA which led to meeting true friends that want the best for me. It also led to a spiritual experience that changed my life forever. There is so much healing, joy, and laughter in recovery, it’s wonderful to experience. I want to tell the person reading this one very important thing —> Don’t you give up. There is a lot of help and happiness in your future. All you have to do is pick up the phone and call them. You’ll find an army of caring and loving souls excited to meet you. You are unique, strong, smart, talented, and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity in your journey of recovery. 🙏🏼❤️ ~Steff P

Choosing to go to Newport Institute in Monticello, MN was one of the hardest — and best — decisions I’ve ever made. The staff truly care and go above and beyond to meet each person where they’re at, with compassion, structure, and an understanding that recovery isn't linear. What stood out to me the most was how personalized everything was. The treatment wasn’t cookie-cutter. My team actually listened — to my story, my needs, and even the things I wasn’t able to say yet. From individual therapy and group work to experiential therapies and life skills, every piece felt intentional and supportive. The environment itself also contributed so much to my healing. It’s peaceful, clean, and feels more like a safe home than a hospital. I also formed some of the most meaningful connections with peers — people who understood what I was going through and were walking beside me in the journey. Of course, healing doesn’t end when you leave, but Newport gave me tools, insight, and strength that I still carry with me. I walked out with more self-awareness, better coping strategies, and, most importantly, hope. If you or someone you love is struggling, I truly believe Newport can be a life-changing place!

I don't know what others are saying, but Penny is a fantastic counselor. She was more than fair with me and runs a good program. I say this from the experience of having been in treatment 6 times. She will work with you, if you work with her. You gotta be willing to do the work tho. Otherwise, like me, you will fail. Its a 0 BS program.

I was court ordered to this facility in April of 1997. I spent my first year as a teenager here and was discharged in May of 1998. Once I began to follow the program my life got easier. There were plenty of horrible moments while I was here though. Any small disobedience would knock you down to level 0 and you were forced to sit in a 6' by 6' box in the lower level of the house for an hour. If you didn't calm down or were disrespectful to the staff your hour on level 0 could turn into several hours of isolation. I spent many hours in the box at a time banging my head against the wall. Eventually I learned to be calm when I got knocked down to level 0 and did my hour of time. In order to get back to the general population you had to write an essay on the behavior that got you put on level 0. Writing was a daily task that I had to complete. I had to think about situations daily where I acted out and write about it. They used thinking errors and tactics to make you think about how you interact with others. I had to goals each day to focus on certain thinking errors and tactics. My handwriting got really small and was perfect from my daily essays. Having to look at myself and my flaws so deeply at such a young age helped shape the person I am today. I was taught that my thoughts became feelings which became emotions and then actions. I had to control my emotions in order to act in a positive manner. I ended up getting to step 4 out 5 in the program before I was discharged. I remember only a handful of kids ever got to step 5. As you progress up the steps you got more privileges. This was a great incentive for me to start acting better. I do believe that there is some sort of brainwashing with having to write about your flaws daily. But this has made me extremely intelligent on how to interact with others and push situations to fit my narrative. As I moved up the steps I was able to transition to the public middle school. The long bus rides to and from school was the highlight of my day. I was able to escape the reality that I was living. I didn't have to think about what I did wrong in the moment and which thinking error I was going to write about. I was able to go on some outings and even a camping trip while I was there. I felt like the staff had my best interests in mind although I would lash out from time to time. My primary staff member Shad really helped me adjust to life at Bar None. He showed me how to be confident with myself and that I was a good person. I ended up becoming a leader of the house I was in even though I was younger than all the other residents. I showed self composure daily and really worked the program that was expected of me. Although I have many negative thoughts about this place; I know that it helped shape the man I am today. I live with integrity and I am a valuable part of my community. As an extremely troubled adolescent and then becoming a leader made me a much stronger person.This place was a challenge that I overcame and I am a better person because of it. I'm not sure how it has changed over the years. I think they had some good things going right for them in the 90's. My experience overall was uplifting but also a struggle at times. Mental and behavioral health will always be up to the individual to want the change.

The nutritionist there is HORRIBLE. I personally am lactose intolerant and when I was admitted my liver was bad, so I needed a diet tailored to helping me recover. She told me if I can’t find anything to just eat from the salad bar. I stood my ground and she let the kitchen staff know I was lactose intolerant and couldn’t eat fried stuff but that is ridiculous I should not have to argue with her. Then my roommate had ARFID so she needed dietary help, and the nutritionist told her to eat bread. That’s a sad and pathetic excuse for a nutritionist. Staffs great but they should certainly fire her.

With any institution trying to implement a broad program for individuals, there are bound to be issues. With that being said, my time at HBF Plymouth was invaluable. I especially want to mention Mary the psychologist & counselors Sara and Cozi on the Pioneer Unit. Advocacy is a huge part of individual recovery, and I was especially encouraged by these three to ask for what I need when I need it. It works if you work it!

Wow! What a journey. Please take this seriously for those in addition or wanting to recover! I went here during covid season 2020 when I got my DUI. I was regretting it, didn't take it seriously, etc. I did my month time stay there. Went home continued with addiction cause I still didn't care. After mother's day weekend on 05.09.22 was my first day of sobriety. I'm still sober to this day. Let me tell you what, I've had the most fantastic experiences and time of my life sober! Looking back, wish I'd took things seriously. I even got off probation this year in June. I wasn't supposed to get off until November next year 2024. I mean God's work is honestly a blessing and you definitely feel him working thru you. I remember starting out here at this place, they said "higher power" and I'm like naw, I don't got that. Not even my kids. Oh yeah, God is my highest power! This place is amazing! Trust me! Great staff, food, location, etc! Just please get help! It's not worth your life ending on bad terms! I will never go back to that life style. Sobriety is just the coolest 😎 Lord the energy you have, stability, motivation, passion to keep striving and going in life! Yes!! No more laziness! Went to this place in 2018 short term program, 3 months. Saved and changed my life. I understand it may not be for some but it always starts with yourself, you have to really want it and if you do the people and counselors here will help guide your way. Not everything is sunshine and rainbows here or anywhere for that matter, you have to be strong you have to be determined and if you are this place will work wonders for you.
