Addiction Challenges for Veterans & Military
The trauma that veterans face during deployment and combat can have enduring and life-altering consequences. In return for the sacrifices our troops make, they deserve to know which U.S. cities have the best veteran’s drug and alcohol rehab programs.
Veterans as a group are at a heightened risk of developing mental illness. This is especially true as they reintegrate into society after military service.
1 in 5 Veterans
Research shows that one in five vets who served in Iraq and Afghanistan currently suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or major depression.
4.4 Million Binge Drinking
According to a 2023 survey by SAMHSA 4.4 million veterans identify as binge drinkers and 4 million have engaged in illicit drug use over the past year.
The good news is there are resources that can help. Many rehab centers have veteran addiction treatment programs designed specifically for this population, led by clinicians who are specially trained to identify and treat substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health conditions in veterans.
If you or someone you love is seeking this type of care it’s important to look for facilities that are equipped to treat the unique needs of vets.
Team members should be trained on issues faced by the military community and understand how to use evidence-based therapies to support your sustained recovery. While these centers are available across the U.S., the following cities are great places to start your search.

How We Chose The Best Cities for Military Drug Rehab
We have spent hundreds of hours analyzing 20,000+ treatment centers to determine the best alcohol & drug rehabs in the U.S. We score centers on multiple criteria, including patient reviews, clinical staff, availability of program information, and brand reputation metrics to determine the top-rated programs in a given city or state.
Learn more about how we score rehab centers.
To determine the best cities for veteran’s rehab, we then analyzed:
- Cities that have 7 or more treatment centers with military-specific treatment programs
- The average score of all those programs
According to our analysis, the best U.S. cities for veteran’s rehab and addiction treatment are:
1. Scottsdale, Arizona

The high quality of life in Scottsdale coupled with robust employment opportunities and a strong sense of community makes it one of the best cities for veteran’s rehab. The city even has its own Veteran and Military Affairs Committee dedicated to supporting professional and academic development for local vets.
Across the city you’ll notice visual displays of this support. From the Scottsdale Memorial for the Fallen to the annual “Scottsdale Salutes” banner recognition program, it’s easy to see that the city cares for its service members.
This includes offering addiction treatment programs to help them overcome SUD. Here are two of the top local options.
Scottsdale Recovery
Scottsdale Recovery has a dedicated program just for veterans, designed to treat not only SUD but co-occurring mental health conditions as well.
They offer a full range of care from medical detox and residential treatment to different levels of outpatient services. They can also connect clients to dedicated peer recovery groups where participants can find support from other veterans who share similar challenges and life experiences.
The Hope House
The Hope House is a luxury residential drug rehab center that gives clients a premium space to relax, recharge and recover. They also offer advanced treatments such as neurofeedback and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
Veterans will especially benefit from their specialized dual diagnosis program which addresses issues like anxiety, depression and PTSD that are common in this community.
2. Las Vegas, Nevada

Veterans in Las Vegas have access to an array of resources including benefits assistance, workforce programs and designated community areas like the Las Vegas Vet Center.
However this population still faces challenges throughout the city. From 2022 to 2023 the percentage of unhoused veterans in Las Vegas increased by more than 60%.
The Southern Nevada Health Care System recently unveiled a new program to support this community. They offer tailored housing assistance specifically for veterans while also connecting them with local facilities for addiction and mental health treatment. The three centers below can provide similar support.
WestCare Nevada – Women and Children’s Campus
At WestCare Nevada – Women and Children’s Campus, clients have access to four unique treatment programs including the Veterans Administration Women Warrior Unit.
Residents can remain on campus for up to 120 days. The VA can refer female veterans to this program which includes emergency housing, case management services and referrals for additional support. Residential addiction treatment is available through The Serenity Program which is offered at the same location.
Desert Hope Treatment Center
In November 2024 Desert Hope Treatment Center partnered with PsychArmor, a top provider of military culture training. After completing the PsychArmor program, the Las Vegas rehab facility is now a designated Veteran Ready Organization (VRO).
This means they’ve met the criteria required to provide culturally competent care exclusively for the veteran community.
Desert Hope is also part of the VA Community Care Network and offers a dedicated veterans recovery track called Salute to Recovery, which includes medical detox, residential treatment and outpatient programs customized for vets.
Lionheart Recovery Center

I have been to several treatment facilities and this one is by far the best one i have been to. Not only is the facility clean and well kept, the faculty that works there have amazing hearts. This is the only treatment facility that i have been to where the staff actually genuinely care for you and your recovery/well being. They have a unique treatment plan that works. Unlike many places I have been to instead of boring you to death, they actually make recovery fun, which in my experience has a lot to do with being able to succeed in recovery. I have recommended multiple friends and family members to go here when they are struggling with addiction and will continue to recommend Steps to Recovery to anyone who asks how i got clean and remained clean. I owe my life and my recovery to these people and they will always have a special place in my heart.

I recently “graduated” from STR. I was in programming between May to September, originally PHP and then in the IOP mental health program. While in PHP I was in housing as well. There are family sessions offered too, but I did not utilize that service while at STR.
While the house I was at was not perfect, administration tried their best to accommodate every concern clients had with the house. It was overall a clean and safe environment to live in. If there are any concerns advocate for yourself and ask a tech to call a house meeting if it is an interpersonal issue within the house. If you have a different issue communicate that to the director and it will most likely be handled promptly.
The PHP (partial hospitalization program) for mental health is six days a week, 9am-1:30 Monday-Friday and 9am-12pm Saturdays. The program changes as needs change. When I first began there process groups were three hours long, but when I left they were two hours long with an additional hour of psych ed. While the day may seem long, everyone gets a break between noon and 12:30. Afternoon there are different types of therapy everyday like art therapy, DBT, CBT.
IOP (intensive outpatient program) is only 9am-12pm three days a week, usually Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. The director is accommodating though so if for any reason you need to not go on a Monday, you could always go on a Saturday if you advocate for yourself.
You’ll have one individual session a week with one of the clinicians. I had Ashley and she is phenomenal. While the staff really do care about the clients, Ashley definitely cares about clients and it shows in her work.
You’ll also have a session with either Dr. Newman or Monique once a week to go over medications they are both amazing!
STR is shaped not just by the staff, but clientele too. I have reinforced and grew my support system while being at STR. And while I was in the mental health program, I have substance use disorder as well, I’d recommend Steps to recovery struggling with their mental health or substance use. It may take a couple of weeks to really settle into the program, but continue to do the work since you are worth it and advocate for yourself if something isn’t working for you.
STR is also a great facility if you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community. The staff here are not just accepting, but affirming. There is an optional LGBTQ+ group once a week with Christian, which was my favorite part of the week.

Sober life is the absolute BEST place to be if you are struggling. I went in 2020 and didn’t complete, and they welcomed me back with open arms march of this year and I went through completion. I have had the opportunity to stay in their network by getting care at SD wellness for psychiatry. Over this holiday week I had forgotten about my refill of a medication I need, I got in contact with Dan from alumni since I forgot what their hours were for thanksgiving and Black Friday, and by today (saturday) I have my refill! I got a personal call from Dr Amaro and got squared away. I’ve never found a medical group that listens, cares, and has better communication than here. I am so happy with this process and will always come back if I need it! Highly recommend!

I am a born pessimist, so I spent a great deal of time looking into this place. First, I found nothing negative whatsoever, Secondly, I spent 60 days here and cried leaving. This place and ALL of it’s staff saved my life. I can remember spending countless times in the nurses station, at the wellness advocates desk, and even in the Blanco hall, talking to the different staff about my days, my problems, my achievements, etc. And EVERY SINGLE PERSON TOOK THE TIME TO LISTEN AND HELP OR CHEER ME ON!! There’s not a staff member in this place that doesn’t care about each person. The therapy sessions are incredible and I can’t thank them enough for showing me I wasn’t hopeless and giving me all the tools I need to have a beautiful, healthy and sober life. I am 45 years old, and I never thought this was possible.

Stop researching treatment centers because this one is hands down the best!! I’ve been to several treatment centers and The Ridge is in a league of their own- for all the good reasons! Yes, it is a beautiful home like atmosphere with a lot of luxuries and outstanding food but the main reason I found The Ridge so helpful to me was the loving and supportive staff and amazing program. And the support doesn’t stop when you leave! I enrolled in IOP and am plugged into the many alumni events they host. Plant City, FL 33563
| WhiteSands Alcohol & Drug Rehab in Plant City, Florida, is an addiction treatment facility for adults. The organization has been in operation since 2014. They offer a variety of programs including their residential program and their medication assisted treatment program. They have a 10 acre campus with private rooms and an athletic complex. WhiteS | Treatments Programs Payment Options | Hi, my name is Jenna, and I am a trash Panda alcoholic. I am not ashamed that I needed help. The quality of the staff is preeminent, and the curriculum is outstanding. I learned the names of almost all the BHTs and the culinary staff because everyone had a hand in my recovery process. This treatment center has a heart for YOUR recovery. It is dual diagnosis, so I recommend that if you have struggles with mental health, addiction, or adulting is just very difficult, and you need time to rediscover who you are, this is the place to be. They make sure you feel physically and emotionally safe while you peel back layers of trauma and begin the process of unbecoming all your limiting beliefs. For far too long, we have listened to that voice of doubt in our heads that is not us. They help you focus a lens on yourself to truly understand who you are and maybe discover your purpose.
You have to do the work and want it, but all the tools are at your fingertips. The facility itself could use a little updating, but I wasn’t there for a vacation. Keep in mind everyone is on their journey, and do not let that distract you from yours. If you are open to it, you can get a handle on your trauma, set goals, and become physically and mentally more steadfast and fit. The food is pretty good with plenty of healthy options and snacks. Shout out to Cameron and Nicole in culinary, I loved seeing your happy faces during mealtime. If you would like a smoothie or a coffee, Mama Missy and Loretta have got you. Speaking of treating your body well, Nicole and Ann Marie will get you spiritually fit and in tune with your body’s ability through amazing and encouraging yoga. If you can discipline your time and make the most of it, going to the gym for boxing is a life changer. Coach Ray and Ernest will push you to respect yourself and realize you are truly a gift from above. Nursing staff is also epic, Tim and Denise are just medical angels!
As for therapists, I named the ones I learned the most

There are very few residential programs in Texas as good as Laha for individuals struggling with addiction. They have a beautiful campus that gives these nostalgic summer camp vibes that brings you back to a happier time. The perfect environment to reconnect with that inner child that needs some healing. Tree House Recovery is a drug and alcohol rehab located in Portland, Oregon. They provide inpatient addiction treatment and sober living for men. Addiction-related services provided at Tree House include | Treatments Programs Payment Options | Witnessing a loved one hit rock bottom is a scary and heartbreaking experience, especially when you hadn’t realized they were struggling with addiction. Then having to suddenly research treatment facilities was a raw mix of emotions. Thankfully we found Tree House Recovery PDX to help guide our entire family through the treatment journey, starting with my brother who was struggling with alcoholism.
Tree House Recovery PDX is a holistic addiction treatment program for men. When first visiting their site, I immediately noticed their empowering voice mixed with an emphasis on team-focused, complete recovery — not to mention MMA, Yoga, and Writing Therapy. Tree House treats the mind, body, and spirit for sustainable recovery, by building strength through fitness, addiction education, writing, 1:1, group sessions, etc. The more we learned about their holistic approach, the more we were ready to contact an admissions counselor — and ultimately my brother made the decision to enter the program.
Privacy is of the utmost importance at Tree House Recovery PDX, so I don’t want to disclose too much, but know that the entire team treats everyone with care, respect, and professionalism. Clinical Director Karen Willock’s monthly family group sessions were particularly impactful, and Nevin Andrews was incredibly responsive and kind throughout my brother’s 5-month treatment. Everyone continues to be supportive, too.
As a family member of a program graduate, I would wholeheartedly recommend Tree House Recovery PDX.

Where to being. Treehouse is the very first place that comes to mind when I think about where I would send a loved one struggling. I went through PDX and it absolutely gave me a foundation to actually build a life. The program design, team, staff, culture allowed me to get to a place of healing that had eluded me for years. I’ve been to 15-20 rehabs in my journey. Detoxes, inpatient , outpatient, Salvation Army, the million dollar mansions in SoCal, and every SUD/ PTSD program the VA has- but none of them got CLOSE to getting me to the place that treehouse has. I am truly grateful for life I live today and I owe a tremendous amount of thanks to Treehouse as a whole#PDX

A Love Letter to the Place That Saved My Life
There are no words big enough, no thank-yous deep enough, to fully express what this place has given me. Walking through the doors of this rehab, I was not just broken—I was gone. A shell. An echo of the person I used to be. I didn’t come in with hope; I came in with desperation. I had burned bridges, lost myself, and forgotten what it meant to truly live. But this place… this place gave me everything back—and more.
From day one, the staff treated me not as a case or a number, but as a soul worth saving. They didn’t judge my past. They held space for my pain, gently guiding me out of the shadows I’d been lost in for so long. They reminded me that I wasn’t just addicted—I was hurting, I was human, and I was still worthy of love.
The counselors weren’t just professionals—they were warriors, walking with us every step, sometimes carrying us when we couldn’t carry ourselves. They challenged us. Believed in us. Cried with us. Laughed with us. Celebrated every tiny victory like it was the Super Bowl. Because in recovery, those victories are everything.
I learned how to feel again. How to breathe. How to forgive myself. I learned that recovery isn’t just about saying no to a substance—it’s about saying yes to life. Yes to family. Yes to morning sunlight and belly laughs and long talks and second chances. I got my smile back here. I got my future back.
I will never forget the people I met here—the late-night talks in the common room, the moments of raw, unscripted honesty, the way complete strangers became family. We cheered each other on. We picked each other up. We healed together. That kind of bond doesn’t fade.
Today, I am sober. I am strong. I am healing. But most importantly—I am here. And I owe that to this sacred place that saw light in me when I could only see darkness.
If you are wondering if this is the place for you, let me say this from the deepest part of my heart: it is. Let this be the start of your miracle, like it was mine.
Thank you, from the bottom of my soul. You didn’t just save my life—you gave me a reason to live it.
Forever grateful,
Cynthia Madison

🌟 A Love Letter to the Place That Helped Me Begin Again 🌟
I don’t know if words will ever fully express what this place means to me — but I’ll try.
When I walked through those doors, I was exhausted. Not just tired — spiritually winded. I was carrying the weight of choices, shame, fear, and the echo of my own voice asking, “Will I ever be whole again?”
And then something happened.
A team of the most compassionate, professional, beautifully human beings I’ve ever met welcomed me — not like a patient, but like a person. Like someone worth fighting for. From the nurses to the counselors, the kitchen staff to the therapists, the front desk to the housekeeping — each one of them carried light into my darkest moments.
They didn’t judge. They didn’t push. They walked with me — step by step — back into myself.
Every group, every one-on-one, every conversation over coffee, every morning reflection… it rebuilt me. They didn’t just treat addiction here — they treated the person beneath it. They reminded me I was still in there, still breathing, still capable of joy, laughter, strength, and purpose.
And yes, I laughed. I cried. I healed. I grew.
If you’re reading this and you’re afraid — please come. If you think it won’t work for you — come anyway. If you believe you’re too broken — you’re not. I promise. I thought that too. And now, by the grace of this place and the hearts that run it, I have hope again.
To the staff: I will never forget you. You saved my life — not just my body, but my soul. I carry your voices with me, your strength, your faith in me even when I didn’t have it myself.
You gave me more than sobriety. You gave me myself back.
Thank you. Forever.
— With all my heart,
[A Grateful Human Being]

Great program great staff 5/15/25 an update since first review: I have now completed the program here at SRC and its been the most amazing beautiful experience here! From the 2 week residential then to the IOP living at Trullies for 90 days, then completing the rest of IOP while I moved to sober living. Everyone from the CEO Lee to the therapist’s to the facilitators, to the behavioral health staff, peer support staff, case managers, and receptionist they all work together closely for each individual patient and their case while they are apart of SRC. Each phase of the program is held delicate for the patient’s, to make it a smooth transition on each phase. They offer OP (outpatient) for the patient’s that have graduated so they still get continued doctor’s appointments, and still are able to have therapy with the therapist that has been with the patient through out the whole program. SRC has offered my life back to me, has taught me many coping skills, relapse prevention skills, trauma therapy, communication skills. A few months ago I experienced an episode of major depression and had lost all hope. I was hospitalised multiple times until I ended up at Lifeskills long-term residential program. Coming to Lifeskills was one of the best decisions I ever made, I learned how to cope with my mental illness through individual and group therapy sessions while living in a community setting where I could lean on my peers for support. Dr. Despina and Dr. Mirella are amazing, it was a blessing to have them as my therapists. I would highly recommend this place to anyone struggling with mental illness, as it will teach you how to navigate life and be the best possible version of yourself.

Having a wiser and more mature mind is a credit to the great teachers at life skills. The staff is truly a blessing. Some of us definitely did not want to be there at times. However we needed the help and support we were given. As long as you let your defenses down and learn you will succeed. You will get out of the program what you put into it.
