About the Facility

Hope & Harriet is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program offered by the YWCA in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They are a 38 bed unit for adult women staffed by trained clinical staff. It's a sub acute medical facility with modern amenities.

Hope & Harriet is unique in that it allows clients’ children (up to age 12) to stay on campus during treatment. They prioritize pregnant women, homeless women, and those using intravenous drugs.

The 38 bed unit gives women a stable living environment as they undergo therapy and work towards stability. The program follows three phases, during which clients develop self confidence, life skills, and coping skills in a friendly community setting. The program is self paced with no set duration.

Hope & Harriet provides numerous therapeutic solutions to accommodate as many people as possible. Their evidence backed programs include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), individual and group therapy, music therapy, and 12 step programs. Additional program features include substance Use Disorder case management, contingency management, meditation, housing placement and counseling, yoga, nutritional and cooking education, and financial education.

The intensive inpatient program’s long term goal is to prepare clients to return to their communities stronger and more resilient than when they entered recovery. However, it doesn’t mean an abrupt end to support from their care team. Instead, aftercare allows clients to collaborate with their case managers, counselors, and others to devise a detailed plan for how they will move forward upon exiting the program.

Aftercare covers a broad scope, allowing each client’s plans to fit their situation better. It includes things like long term goal setting, financial goals, finding secure housing, connecting with family support systems, and networking with community resources to aid in continuing recovery. Aftercare planning takes place gradually throughout treatment and at discharge.

The Hope & Harriet house is certified by the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction and the Commission for Accreditation of Residential Facilities.

book iconAlcoholism

If a person has alcohol use disorder (AUD), also referred to as alcoholism, they experience a desire or physical need to consume alcohol. A person with AUD may try to stop drinking but they are unsuccessful without professional help. Alcohol rehab in Indiana can provide the resources necessary to achieve and maintain recovery. Rehab programs typically involve a combination of medical, behavioral, and social supports to overcome alcohol addiction.

prescription iconDrug Addiction

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

file-medical iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

In Indiana, mental health and substance abuse treatment utilizes evidence-based and holistic therapeutic interventions. Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps you to identify and modify harmful thought patterns and behaviors, motivational interviewing encourages your desire and commitment to change, group therapy provides a supportive community, and family therapy helps you to improve relationships and develop important post-treatment support. These critical components are the key to long-term recovery.

prescription-bottle-pill iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

car-building iconOutpatient

Outpatient rehab programs provide flexibility and choice for clients who do not require intensive inpatient treatment. Clients remain in their own homes and may continue to work or attend schools while in active recovery. Outpatient treatment typically includes addiction counseling and continuing recovery education, including courses in self-care and relapse prevention. Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is available in many treatment centers for clients in opioid and/or alcohol recovery.

bed-front iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

house iconSober Living Homes

The main rule in a sober living home in Indiana is that residents cannot use or bring alcohol or drugs into the home. Breaking this rule typically results in eviction. In addition to this rule, men’s and women’s sober living homes have other standards that residents must meet. These usually include maintaining a job, helping with meal preparation and house cleaning, and attending 12-step meetings.

book-medical icon12-Step

12 step programs foster participants’ long-term sobriety through personal growth rooted in spiritual principles, though religious affiliation is not mandatory. Most 12 step meetings are non-denominational but are based on the belief in a higher power. Participants learn to understand and address the causes of their addiction, accept responsibility for their choices, and relinquish control for that which cannot be changed. Regular group meetings and mentoring by a self-selected sponsor are required.

house-medical iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Terrible clinical director

The recovery team hides in their offices and leaves the desk people to take care of us. The director has private meetings with us in our bedrooms. They play favorites and lets the other people come in drunk and high.
