Marion, IL | Located in Marion, Illinois, the Marion VA Medical Center is a comprehensive medical facility for veterans. This facility offers a variety of medical services including inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment and mental health care. One unique component of this VA is the specialized programming available for women veterans, minority veterans, | Treatments Programs Payment Options | As a spouse of veteran with his power of attorney, representative, and caretaker, I was thankful to receive information years ago regarding my spouse demanding me to come home, calling my phone sometimes 60 to 70 times every time I left home, with excuse he had multiple VA appointments and that I was preventing him from tending to by having car. One time I drove straight to VA with POA to learn he had no appointments - and many prior times were excuses as well. Somebody informed him of me being at the VA, leading to him thinking I was sleeping with someone there ( no ). I spoke with pharmacist regarding meds he was put on then quicky taken off Prozac and started acting bipolar, borderline schizophrenic when doing marijuana and drugs, wanting me to join in then thinking I'm a bore cause I wouldn't, put it in my food anyway then make fun of how I act. They said there is nothing in his chart that is wrong with him - nothing to make him abuse, grape, or be evil. Its just who he is. After raising a type 1 diabetic that would hit, kick, scream, and abuse me too during her sugar rages, I realized I never retaliated despite ups and downs in my life, and my veteran spouse and type 1 do not act that to others. I was thankful for the clarity as I have for years, and would have continued giving grace forever for bad behavior. I am not the military person, not veteran - I am a spouse caretaker thankful they helped me with information provided.

My father received excellent care at Marion VA hospital. He was under hospice care. His Dr. and nurses went above and beyond to care for him and make him comfortable. His Dr. even came in on Memorial Day weekend on her day off to make sure he was comfortable. The care and compassion we were shown i didnt think existed in our health care system. He was also assigned to a group at the VA. NVDA - no veteran will die alone. This is a wonderful group of volunteers that came and stayed with us. They would come and sit outside your room in case you needed a break. They would come in and sit with my Dad so we could get food or rest. You can not imagine the peace we felt knowing they were there. It is hard to put into words the gratitude we feel for such excellent care.

I went there twice. The first time was back in December and the second time was in January. The first time was horrible the first night I didn’t sleep at all. The workers there seemed professional and helpful. The only issue I had was the lack of communication to the outside world. If your like me then your always busy so being locked in a building that only lets you use the phone at 5pm did me more harm then good. I will admit there are a few employees who genuinely don’t care about you. There is only one licensed physiatrist there and he didn’t seem to care to chit chat with his patients. When I was there I enjoyed playing cards and watching tv with the other patients they were really good people and it saddens me to see such pure and good people struggle with mental illnesses. There wasn’t much to do except wake up take meds and eat. At the end of each day we had group therapy. The food was great and plentiful and the meds really evened out my moods and made me more calm. Because the meds helped with anxiety my BP went from 160/75 to a low 123/85. I was glad to be a patient there and I think it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety disorder, psychosis although I wasn’t hallucinating. And the second time I went I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety disorder, and a NOS personality disorder.

I ain’t gonna lie I did not like going to counseling my first go round. I wasn’t ready for the help. The 2nd time i loved going. & between both times my counselor did act differently because they could see that I was trying vs before when I was not. & I understand completely why I got different vibes. I didn’t want help. then when I did they all helped me. I see some reviews saying staff was rude ect. Personally not once was anyone just rude to me. Now did some make it clear they seen threw my bull, yup. As she should have! absolutely recommend going there if you genuinely want help! If you do not want help and ur there for other reasons they wil be able to tell. I even ended up homeless for 5 months, basically like my little sister died, I missed counseling sooo much & they still worked with me & tried to help even tho they could have kicked me out for not going only cuz they knew I was actually trying. I have mad love for all these people after round 2. Before tho I did not at all. basically ur vibe depends on the vibe you will get. but it wouldn’t be helpful for them to just act like they didn’t notice ur not trying.
