Common Ground staff saved my life! I spent about 8 days in the CRU. When I arrived, I had basically given up. When I was discharged, I had a small flicker of hope. The CRU was the perfect setting to readjust my meds. The staff are super awesome and will bend over backwards to try to get whatever you need for your recovery.
Thank you, Common Ground and CRU staff!

Update 3/20/25: Upon leaving this review, the medical director here went absolutely above and beyond to fix any issues that I had and went completely out of their way to accommodate my needs on a level I’ve never experienced at any doctors office in my life. In fact, I’m incredibly grateful for the doctors here, and although their front desk staff could clearly use some work in professionalism and providing proper compassionate care to patients, especially around the holidays, I must say this place is lead with compassionate, heartfelt, loving people who truly care about their patients. I wish that was more obvious from the beginning. I thank Easterseals for the way they went above and beyond for me. Thank you
Original Review 12/20/24: Once again, I just called to figure out how to proceed with a prior authorization in 2025 with the medical assistant because my medication will no longer be covered by my insurance in 2025. While the medical assistant and I were communicating, someone working there in the background began screaming and shouting at me in the most unbelievably rude unprofessional manner. Literally shouting and screaming at me in the background. I did not raise my voice one single time. I am so unbelievably shocked I am genuinely afraid for my health and wellbeing regarding my professional health with this company. I have been trying to call back to speak to a supervisor just to make sure my medication is being taken care of and I am getting ignored over and over again at the front desk. This feels intentional and I am begging someone from this company to please contact me directly. The stress and toll this is taking on my mental health is making my mental health even worse when this establishment was supposed to help mental health in our community. Please someone contact me directly so I can get support I need for my mental health.

| Grace Centers of Hope Men’s Program is an organization that focuses on men with substance use issues. They are located in Pontiac, Michigan. They are a Christian organization and attending religious services is a condition of staying there. They have a women’s program as well. They do not offer detox services at this facility. Grace Centers of | Treatments Programs Payment Options | My name is James Nicholas, and if you would've met me five years ago, you'd have likely crossed the street to avoid me—or maybe I would've crossed it myself, ashamed and too drunk to look anyone in the eye. Today, by the grace of God, I walk with my head held high—not in pride, but in awe. Because I should be dead. Or locked up for life. Or lost forever. But Jesus had other plans.
I spent over 20 years behind bars, scattered between Alabama and Michigan prisons, the result of a life ruled by addiction, destruction, and desperation. I had once believed I was beyond saving. I was a crack-smoking, vodka-pounding, naked-on-a-bike kind of broken, with a rap sheet and a rap sheet's worth of regrets. I was the guy everyone gave up on—except Jesus.
I chased drug’s and alcohol the way I should’ve been chasing God. And in my madness, I wrecked marriages, friendships, and even my own children’s trust. I blew eight years of sobriety after my first wife went to prison. That pain sent me spiraling down faster than I thought possible. I landed in a filthy room above a bar in Monroe, Michigan, living like an animal—meth, LSD, crack, booze—sometimes all at once. I didn’t care if I lived or died. Truth be told, I preferred the latter.
But on May 6, 2020, I reached the end of myself. No money. No hope. No home. Just me, a phone, and a decision: die alone, or cry out for help. I called my friend Craig Mortz, and in that moment, God cracked open the door to freedom. Three days later, I walked into Grace Centers of Hope—broken, stinking, and terrified. It was the beginning of everything new.
Grace Centers didn’t just clean me up—they raised me from the dead. It wasn’t just about sobriety or a bed to sleep in; it was about structure, accountability, faith, and family. It was about learning how to live again—with purpose, with dignity, and most importantly, with Jesus Christ at the center.
I started mopping floors and cleaning toilets. I loved it. Not because I had to—but because, for the first time, I was useful again. Then something crazy happened: I began to believe what Pastor Clark was preaching. That Romans 8:28 wasn’t just ink on a page—that “all things work together for good to those who love God” could actually include me. Even after everything I had done.
The Word of God began to heal what 13 rehabs, 20 years in prison, and countless bottles couldn’t. I stopped trying to numb my past and started surrendering it. One day, I looked in the mirror and realized—I wasn’t a mistake. I wasn’t trash. I was a new creation in Christ. Forgiven. Redeemed. Repurposed.
Today, I’m sober. I’m married to the most amazing woman, Rebecca, who loves Jesus as much as I do. I own a detailing business—The Detail Pro LLC—with a reputation for excellence in the metro area. I help build homes for the very people I used to be: addicted, abused, and abandoned. And I get to tell them—there’s hope. Because I’m living proof.
Grace Centers of Hope gave me the structure. Jesus gave me the strength. Together, they turned my tomb into a testimony.
So, to anyone out there thinking it’s too late or too far gone—look at me. From drunk tank to detail shop. From prison stripes to paint sprayers. From despair to discipleship. All because God never gave up on me. And because somebody built a place called Grace Centers of Hope, where I found not just help—but healing.
My name is James Nicholas.
I was a slave to addiction.
Now, I’m a servant of the Most High God.
And I’m here to scream it from the rooftops:
Jesus saves. Jesus restores. Jesus redeems.
And I'm living proof, I love you Jesus Christ.
