Pioneer Recovery Center changed my life. I stayed from December through January, my first time in a rehab setting, and I was anxious beyond belief. But the warmth I felt from both the staff and the other women there made all the difference. Dani and Que in particular are phenomenal women who left a lasting impact on me.
The groups focused not just on addiction, but on deeper healing—on reclaiming parts of yourself you might have lost along the way. That’s what stuck with me most. I left with a sense of community I’d never truly felt before—a powerful connection among women, among addicts, rooted in honesty and compassion. I still carry that with me. There was something transformative about standing in a room full of women, staff and clients alike, and feeling truly seen.
Because it’s a smaller space, it can start to feel like family (for better or worse) and that actually helped ease the anxiety I brought in, especially after a rough experience in detox. The intimacy helped me let my guard down.
That said, there were times I wished for a bit more structure, especially on weekends when things could feel slow or repetitive. Some groups felt redundant after a while, and being there during the coldest part of winter didn’t help the stir-craziness. But I recognize a lot of that comes down to funding limitations, not the heart or effort of the staff.
Still, throughout my stay, I never once felt judged for who I was or where I was in my recovery. I never felt dismissed or invalidated. Something shifted in me while I was there, some deep inner strength I’d always had but couldn’t believe in until then.
I don’t regret going to Pioneer for a second. It’s not the Ritz-Carlton of rehab centers, but it’s real. It’s human. And it has a special place in my heart. Today, I’m 151 days sober.
