Nova Luna Center is a mental health day treatment program that empowers people to be their own guides and healers through a process of self-discovery as they address their depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, and other more serious emotional issues and behaviors. Nova Luna Center is the first health care facility of its kind for the treatm
I’m writing this review for the part of me who previously felt terrified to speak up for herself in fear of retaliation. I was a client at Nova Luna from the ages of 15-18 years old, and I am now 21. My mother remains a current client within the program. I felt pressured to stay and was discouraged when I wanted to seek other support. I was given the perception that the program was my only way to heal and that the clinical director was better than any other clinician I could find elsewhere. I felt saddened whenever she spoke poorly about other professionals/programs in the area who others have had positive experiences with. Towards the end of my time at Nova Luna, many of the therapists/clinicians resigned and the clinical director was seeing my mother and I for individual/family therapy as there were no other therapists working within the program. I was not allowed to remain friends with clients who discharged themselves without “graduating,” which saddened me as I built many friendships there. Further, I felt my confidentiality as well as other clients’ confidentiality wasn’t taken seriously compared to how I see my confidentiality being taken now. After an accumulated list of events, I took a leap of faith soon after turning 18 to seek a trauma-informed therapist who I feel safe with. Three years have passed. Since leaving, I have a greater ability to advocate for myself and have grown more than I ever thought possible. I have learned that there are many paths to life and one therapist doesn’t have the power or capacity to be the perfect fit for every client. I have learned that nothing scary will happen if I choose to contact people that I wish to connect with. I have learned that I can bring my thoughts, feelings, and vulnerabilities to therapy and have it be received without an alarming reaction. I have learned that some people may tell me what they believe is best for me, although at the end of the day, it is me who is living my life and I have the ability to choose who witnesses and supports me through whatever phase I’m in. Most importantly, I can confidently identify what a safe therapeutic relationship is and no longer question if I deserve anything less. As a therapist, you leave an imprint on each client that walks through your door. Additionally, you have the power to choose what kind of imprint you wish to have. There were many wonderful moments at Nova Luna and I will forever be grateful for what I have learned there and for the people I met. However, there were also things that needed improvements towards the end of my time within the program that I have been too afraid to share. I wholeheartedly believe that it’s important for everyone to find support they feel is best for them, whether it's at Nova Luna, another program, or working with a therapist in Private Practice. I wish you the absolute best on your journey towards recovery + healing.

The well educated counselors and skilled therapists at ‘O’hana Makamae approach recovery differently from other drug and alcohol treatment centers. Clients are seen as individuals and are treated as valued members of a family. They Recognize no “one size” recovery plan works for everyone. Treatment plans provide life skills used in building individual success stories. Is ‘Ohana Makamae for everyone... absolutely not. It’s purpose is to be a hand that leads those suffering with substance use disorders out of the darkness into the light.... while embracing Hawaiian values, traditions and heritage. I enjoyed everyday working with the clinical staff and witnessing lives change. I’d most definitely return in the future.

That I'm having a manic episode then cancel future appts. and medication for PTSD, Post concussion syndrome, etc. What the hell. I recorded the video call that we had that day and not one time did I mention suicide. After weeks of jumping through hoops. Getting a referral, drug and alcohol assessment, psych evaluation, then being put on a waiting list. Calling every mon wed fri as instructed, I was finally told they would not take me because I did not have permanent housing and...I HAD BEEN CLEAN TOO LONG. 6 weeks I thought that was a good thing. Extremely unresponsive and extremely slow. It took a month to get my records transferred from the mainland. Even then, they seemed to not ever be able to access any of my past medical history. I had to start all over with multiple doctors visits in various departments. Definitely not a fluke when 3 different departments have the same problem with communication. It took at least 3 months just to get scheduled with each one. I have called and had to ‘leave a message’ multiple times, emailed, used secure message and even gone in in-person several times. All the while, when I do finally reach a person, though they are most often polite and apologetic, I still don’t get access to anyone who can actually schedule an appointment. It’s always, “leave your name and number and we’ll have someone call you back.” But they never do. 3 months waiting for medication, 6 months waiting for new eyeglasses, 7 months still trying to get any kind of mental health treatment, 1 month now waiting to get an appointment for a back injury, and never received any phone call back from my PCP trying to get a follow-up after a broken ankle that took me to the ER 6 months ago. One nurse suggested I call the main VA headquarters to complain, though she couldn’t give me a phone number. So I looked online, and guess what… 3 hour hold time! Absolutely the worst I’ve experienced in the US, not just with the VA, but in all healthcare I’ve ever received in my life.

I had a great experience with Ku Aloha. I was on the clinic for almost 5 years. I even stopped smoking cigarettes when I was on the clinic. We had to attend group sessions and one on one counseling sessions.i decided to attend their tobacco cessation program. They gave me patches and gum to help with the cravings and honestly I wouldn't have been able to stop without them. Patches and gum are expensive at Longs . They really helped my Well Being in every aspect. With the individual counseling and the group sessions , I was really able to feel good about myself again. Thank you to all the counselors and doctors and nurses and staff that helped me there .
