Casco Bay Recovery was my first experience seeking treatment, and I couldn’t have imagined a more compassionate and supportive environment. From the moment I reached out, they responded quickly, got me into the program without delay, and treated me with respect every step of the way. Not once did I feel judged, rushed, or like just another name on a list. They were instrumental in guiding me to the recovery I have today. What makes this place stand out is the people — the staff come from a wide range of backgrounds, and every one of them brings personal insight and deep knowledge of recovery and addiction. Their stories were moving and relatable, and their support felt real and grounded. If you’re hesitant about treatment because of the religious elements you’ve heard about in AA, don’t let that stop you from coming here. Casco Bay Recovery centers its program on therapy-based recovery work. Any spiritual or religious connection you build is entirely up to you — nothing is pushed on you. They meet you where you're at. If you’re ready to take that first step, this is the place to do it. I’m so grateful I did.

I enjoy this VA hospital. I actually enjoy going to my VA appointments at this facility. I'm treated like a king. I usually start with a provided snack and coffee in their roomy sitting area. When I walked through the doors at Crossroads for residential treatment, I was dying—inside and out. Addiction and an eating disorder had taken everything from me. I was exhausted, hopeless, and scared. I didn’t know who I was anymore, and I didn’t believe I could be saved. But slowly, with the unwavering support of the clinicians, psychiatrist, nurse, dietitian, and every member of the staff, something inside me began to shift. For the first time in a long time, I felt seen. I felt cared for. And I started to believe that healing was actually possible. Residential treatment gave me what I needed most: safety, stability, and space to breathe. I was taught the foundations of DBT and CBT, and I was given healthy, practical coping skills—tools that I still carry with me every day. My 1:1 sessions with my clinician and dietitian helped me uncover pieces of myself I’d buried for years. I was met with kindness, not judgment. Compassion, not shame. And that changed everything. When I moved into PHP, I continued learning how to live again. I started facing my trauma head-on and finally began to understand just how deeply it had shaped my relationship with substances, food, and myself. That insight was painful—but it was also freeing. IOP supported me as I began stepping back into the world. It was scary, but I wasn’t alone. Crossroads gave me a soft place to land while I figured out how to walk through life on new, steadier legs. Even now, I continue to meet with my clinician weekly, still learning, still growing. The truth is, Crossroads gave me more than treatment—they gave me my life back. In the year since I arrived, I’ve changed in ways I never thought were possible. I’ve discovered who I am beyond my pain. I’ve built a new identity, one that’s no longer defined by alcoholism and anorexia. For the first time in my life, I feel safe in my body and in the world. I am endlessly grateful. Crossroads didn’t just help me recover—they helped me come home to myself. And I truly mean it when I say: this program saved my life.

The Salvation Army Adult Rehab Center is a residential rehab for adult men in Portland, Maine. The Salvation Army actually has these rehab centers throughout the country too. This is a unique type of drug and alcohol treatment program. It’s largely a work therapy program so you’ll be working in Salvation Army facilities throughout your program
Went to the Salvation Army right after receiving a calling from the Lord to follow Him while incarcerated. God used the Portland ARC to shepherd and led me deeper into my faith. Once a man lost in opiate, meth, and sexual immorality. I never thought I would escape this cyclical pattern of incarceration illegal activity and addiction now redeemed and a Servant Leader (mentor) at a neighboring Ministry. God desires to move in your life, you just need to desire to stop living for your own selfish desires. Matthew 16:25 "For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it." God is the divine creator not a cosmic killjoy, he gave you your innermost desires because he wants to fulfill them, you just need to stop living for them and live for Him. On our own our once good desires become over-desires and we twist the light in them because it becomes "all about me" and there is no love in that. Start living for God and you will be amazed at what he does with your life.

I came to Skip Murphy’s on August 4, 2014 following several attempts at treatment over the course of nearly four years. Skip Murphy’s gave me a new start, and options that I had not had previously. I think that it was the combination of support, structure, fellowship and the 12 step program, as well as working with a sponsor that allowed me to focus on my sobriety. Also, I have been able to make a lot of caring and supportive friendships. I was able to finally get my life back on track at Skip’s: I now have a good job, and I’m straightening out other aspects of my life that had fallen apart during my active addiction. I am very proud to belong to this program, and do my best to represent the name as it has given so much to me. I am very grateful for this opportunity.

What can I say? Skip Murphy's has been exactly what I needed when I needed it. Here I was provided with the guidance and tools necessary to begin me upon my journey of recovery. Immediately upon admittance, I had a good vibe about this place. The staff and clients were friendly, courteous, and clearly had something working in their lives that I needed. I was shown around Portland and made to feel right at home. I was finally surrounded by people who genuinely cared about me and had a solution that they were more than eager to share with me. Unlike places I had been previously, the owner, Joe, personally met with me and helped set up a plan of action. He was much more concerned with how to help rather than if my rent was paid yet. Skip Murphy's has helped me and countless others to find the solution to drug addiction and alcoholism as I'm sure it will for countless others for many years to come.

I spent a little over 2 weeks in the Neurosurgery ICU after having a subarachnoid hemorrhage. I can't even find the words to write how amazing the nurses were. I learned so much about how much nurses have to do for each patient. The fact that they have to do everything that they do and still find the time to have conversations that make patients feel like they are human and not just a number is absolutely incredible. The doctors were also wonderful, they took the time to speak with me about my condition and next steps without making me feel like I was wasting their time or that they were rushed. The environmental services staff came in every day to make sure that my room was clean, and they always had a smile. Thank you Maine Medical for keeping me alive and for your compassionate care!

The closest thing I had to home, was at this place where I was able to grow and learn and open up and become the person I am. The love and commitment across-the-board is beyond remarkable and friendships to this day exist. If there’s something that they couldn’t achieve or help and were aware of that, they made sure to support and assist me in finding help for myself with drs and more. They help me learn basics, and supported me to go to college and not live like I was. They worked hard on communication and Trust with everyone being held accountable themselves. How Much Does Drug Rehab Cost in Portland?

Portland is the 107th most expensive city nationwide for addiction treatment affordability, with an average cost of addiction treatment of $58391. This is comparable to the average cost of $56108 for addiction treatment in Maine and comparable to the national average cost for drug rehab of $57,193.

The costs of drug and alcohol rehab in Portland vary widely and depend on several factors, including:

Comparing the Cost of Rehab in Portland

The costs of addiction treatment listed for cities and states are averages based on the cost of medical detox, inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab, and medication assisted treatment. These averages are high due to the cost of medical detoxification and residential inpatient rehab programs.

These numbers also reflect the raw cost of drug rehab, before any insurance coverage. The typical individual seeking addiction treatment can expect to pay much less for outpatient or intensive outpatient services than the averages listed below.

How to Pay for Addiction Treatment in Portland?

There are many ways to pay for drug rehab in Portland. Most rehab treatment centers accept cash or self-payment, as well as private health insurance. However, there are many treatment centers in Portland that accept Medicaid and Medicare, or offer sliding scale payments or other low-cost payment options. Here's the complete breakdown of how to pay for addiction treatment near Portland.

Drug Use in Portland

Portland has the 4th highest rate of drug use nationwide among nearly 400 cities surveyed. This number reflects the combined use of cocaine, heroin, meth, and marijuana, displayed individually below. The percent shown for each drug represents the number of residents in Cumberland county that have reported ever using the following drugs, so these numbers should not be interpreted as direct evidence of current drug use in Portland or Cumberland county as a whole.
