Chad Crutchfield 4 months ago Update 12-4-2024: Yeah, I'm still pissed off that I had been a patient in Utah State Hospital because forced confinement is not good for my self-esteem at the time of September 2014-October 2015 because I felt like I was unworthy to society & people hate me & discriminate against me or something. If someone has never been a patient to Utah State Hospital before & they were forced to be confined there they will probably think that is unfair & also there is a stigma against people who are in mental hospitals & they get made fun of if anybody finds out, some people won't make fun of you for being a former mental patient though because they are nice enough to understand Utah has a bad mental health crisis, but my life is ruined by Utah State Hospital because of my PTSD from getting bullied in there. Also, about the rules of Utah State Hospital being too harsh to follow I think it's too harsh to take someone's freedom & certain rights for breaking a certain rule or rules in Utah State Hospital. I also, believe the security guards in Utah State Hospital are harsh too because one of them was being stupid & almost broke my shoulder in one of my anger outbursts on April 2015. I don't think the punishments & restraints against me taught me a lesson to never be angry again it just taught fear & intimidation to obey. There was no clear plan to fix my anger problem in Utah State Hospital besides putting me in unsafe restraints & yelling at me if I was angry. All I wanted that would've made my stay at Utah State Hospital more positive was if I have a better say in my treatment plan & the staff don't kick my butt in a restraint as a first option in my frequent anger outbursts because I just wanted to be respected & treated like a human being in there. Look from my experience yes there were days in Utah State Hospital that were chill & cool to go through, but from my experience since I had a bad anger problem as a teenager I whenever I got bullied a lot by patients and/or staff I got angry and got my level down to red and my privileges got taken away because I went too far to stand up to my bullies by swearing at them and I didn't know how to stand up to them without being too angry and swearing. I also think it's stupid & shameful that the staff bullied me too because they got nothing better to do in their life because they are a low-life loser for bullying mental patients because they think we are easy targets to pick on and that was irresponsible & stupid of them & they should apologize for being bullies because they supposed to be responsible for patient safety. I tried my hardest to follow these rules, but I think it's traumatizing to go through extreme control. Update 11-18-25: Hey, If anybody has a problem with me giving a one star review to Utah State Hospital then that's judgmental. Edit & Clarifications: Alright, I recognized I've told you about all of the bad things about Utah State Hospital too much. I'll tell you what might be good about it & then again if your doctor, judge, & treatment team have sent me or you to Utah State Hospital that whole decision was not made lightly & if it was done without careful consideration then screw them. Utah State Hospital is pretty good for me when I was there as far as the friends I've made in my stay in this place from 2014-2015. I had an awesome time with my therapist Doug Stone & I'm not sure if he is still there as a therapist for boy's youth. There are jobs in Utah State Hospital you can take as a patient & save money for your life after you get discharged from here. Utah State Hospital will pay for your family member's gas & travel expense to go visit you because most of the time Utah State Hospital is too far from home. Overall, you may not get freedom & certain major rights, but if you like getting free stuff & room & board covered for you by taxpayers then you would like Utah State Hospital better than I would. New Haven gave me what I needed to succeed, not what I wanted but what I needed. As always, there were definitely ups and downs to my stay but that is to be expected if anyone is growing and learning. And, I learned so many lessons that will keep me on the right path in life. One of the most important things that I learned during my stay was that I am good enough. That I don’t have to be good enough for others to be good enough for myself. I learned that honesty, even when it is hard, is one of the best ways to achieve a healthy relationship with anyone. This helped me grow my relationship with my parents because the value of honesty is one of the most important ones for our family. The program doesn’t just focus on the kid but the family as a whole. One big thing that they have the families explore is the idea of the problem is the problem. That no individual is the issue but, the actions and contributing factors are. My family and I have been taught how to separate the person from the action in order to move through a problem to get to the other side. There are many important pieces that build on healthy relationships and New Haven gave me the space to figure out how to have those healthy relationships. The staff who work there are truly there for the kids, to help them grow and move through the challenges that come their way. My therapist, Amy is one of the most brilliant people I have ever met. She would tell it to me straight if I messed up, give me advice when I needed it, help me work through my trauma, and have fun with me too. The program also assigns a residential staff to each student called a relational coach. My coach was Lauryn and she helped me work through the dynamics of healthy relationships. She stuck with me through my entire journey even when it was hard. I now have so many people in my corner including Amy and Lauryn who are rooting for me, that I can lean on when I need support. I have lots of tools to use when I make mistakes that can help me bounce back faster every time. I have so many healthy relationships with my family, my peers, the staff, and my therapist. I no longer have to worry about whether I have a future or not, because I now have all the things that I need to be successful in the goals that I work toward. I have learned that it is okay to struggle, that it is a normal thing that happens to everyone, but what counts is how you deal with it. I owe a big thank you to everyone who supported me, all of the employees, the amazing peers, Amy and Lauryn, and the amazing place and community that I have loved to be a part of. I also think it’s worth noting that many of these negative reviews come from people who left treatment early. Those experiences are absolutely valid, however they do not reflect what it’s like to move through the entire program and experience the full process. things often feel hardest before getting better. To preface this, my journey at New Roads has been anything but easy (for me or staff). When working through years of pain, fear, and maladaptive behaviors, emotions can be really overwhelming, and it’s easy to direct those feelings toward the treatment process itself. There were many moments pushed me FAR past my comfort zone and forced me to confront parts of myself I had been trying to avoid. I realize now that those moments weren’t signs that treatment wasn’t working, they were evidence that it was. I just wasn’t able to see that until after I graduated from the residential program. Before coming to New Roads, I had been to several different treatment centers. I always left feeling like another patient rather than an individual. I never felt understood and I struggled that anyone genuinely cared. By the time I arrived at New Roads in May 2024, I was emotionally done, impacted by trauma, and had almost no hope that this place would be any different. I felt so broken, misunderstood, and convinced i was beyond help. I honestly came to treatment because it was the box I was supposed to check, not because I believed it could actually help. I definitely wasn’t expecting healing. However, I found something I had never fully experienced before: people who truly cared. The staff (mostly) saw me as a person first, not a diagnosis or a presentation of symptoms. They held me accountable when needed and yet still showed compassion. There were days I wanted to leave and did. There were days i questioned the process and did, and times I caught myself directing my frustration with recovery toward the people who were trying to help me. I can see that those reactions were part of healing, not proof that treatment was failing. The support I received when it felt nearly impossible, gave me courage to keep going. Today, I can honestly say that choosing New Roads was one of the most rewarding decisions. It gave me way more than skills or a break from my struggles. It gave me hope, confidence, and the belief that I could build a life worth living. No treatment center is perfect, and everyone’s experience will be different. I don’t want to diminish anyone else’s story, because every person’s experience is real and deserves to be heard. At the same time, I think it’s equally important for people considering treatment to know that positive experiences exist too. I walked in there a total shaking wreck, heavily dependent on alcohol and in the process of dying, with undiagnosed and untreated mental health issues that led to my drinking. I spent 4 days in detox, getting my physical health back and decided to spend 28 days in residential treatment there. The staff were all experienced, and many of them have been in successful recovery themselves. The treatment I received there was compassionate and effective. I learned things about myself that I had been hiding from my whole life. I was able to heal old traumas and evolve into the person I want to be, rather than the person I accidentally became. I also had FUN and connected with people that will probably be lifelong friends, After residential treatment I went into their Partial Hospitalization Program and continued to receive education and help in building healthy thoughts and habits. I learned to respond to life, rather than reacting to it. My anxiety and depression melted away, layer by layer as I turned into a more effective and happy version of myself. Today I am 4 months sober, but I've learned that sobriety is just a side-effect of living the life that I choose. I do not believe that I could have done this without the wonderful humans at Recovery Ways, and all the care and love (and FUN) they shared with me. Highly recommended. And don't listen to the talk about the food. My nutritional skills also improved as a result of living there for 60 days. It may not be Club-Med, but that's not the purpose of being there. (They serve a salsa there that is better than I have ever had anywhere else.) David Lang 8 months ago I voluntarily admitted myself to Recovery Ways in September 2023. When I was calling about admissions I was staying in the behavioral unit of St. Marks Hospital, and Recovery Ways made accommodations for one of their team members to pick me up straight from the hospital. In-take was very fast. The staff at Recovery Ways Residential Care (Copper Hills) were very nice and friendly. They were able to make professional connections to each client, including myself. Although they weren't qualified to make treatment plans, diagnosis etc. they offered to have 1:1 discussions with clients if they weren't able to speak to a therapist on-site or on-call. For me, the situation wasn't as dire, or needed medical intervention, but they still talked to me about a struggle I was going through with my family. The occupational therapists are very sweet and insightful. Yes, they do help clients shop for nicotine, or do smoking supply runs every week. But, when I was at Recovery Ways (copper hills) it was clear to me that they weren't going to associate themselves with forcing clients/patients to adhere to strict guidelines but rather held us accountable for our actions. For instance, I was told by therapists and staff members that it is my choice if I want to pick up smoking, but they advised strongly to clients/patients to do their best to not pick up smoking habits as it will stunt our overall recovery from other substances or make it harder to receive successful treatment. The other residents/clients who smoked would also tell me to not start smoking or vaping. My therapist did have me go over my past trauma with her, but it was so she could have a better understanding of my case. The Med Technician who administered my prescriptions to me helped advocate for me to my psychiatrist appointed by Recovery Ways about having ongoing PTSD related night terrors. Because of him, I was able to be put on a sleeping pill and another medication that helps with PTSD night terrors. I went into Recovery Ways experiencing suicidal ideation (and having recently attempted), urges to self-harm, mania and lots of other symptoms/diagnoses. But, at the end of my treatment (after moving to Brunswick) I was able to recover successfully. Two years later and my GAD is in remission, my psychotic symptoms that was diagnosed alongside my Bipolar 1 Disorder is no longer affecting me. I have also stayed with their recommended psychiatrist when I was being discharged from Recovery Ways. And their excursions for physical activity/occupational therapy activities were kind of like surprises but they still gave us a few minutes to get dressed for the activities. Overall, my experience was amazing and every staff in each Recover Ways building were very helpful. I don't know if the chef at Brunswick is still working there, but in 2023 he was an amazing cook and made sure each meal he made satisfied the residents/clients. She even took the time to drive me back to the airport, which was such a thoughtful gesture that I will never forget. What meant the most to me was seeing the way the staff spoke to Giavonna. They treated her with patience and care and made her feel heard rather than judged. Sure its ghetto… n seems that everyone that goes or well 90% of the clients clearly still use… but if u pay to much attention to those details rather than the real reason ur goin there ( your self) then u have already lost the fight.. stop taking so much time worrying about everyone else and focus on u and why u r getting help!
