We flew in on a prop plane in the dead of winter to spend his last week with him. I was in 8th grade and catching HIV was like having leprosy, but worse. The hospital scared me at first. The smells and sight of older sick people was almost too much for my developing mind. Then, I saw my once strong and handsome 41 yo father not able to lift his head. He died but they brought him back before we arrived. When I say they were doing absolutely everything to keep him alive to see his kids, I mean everything! A miracle happened and the next day, he was sitting up and telling us stories. He loved that! We loved that! We spent every waking hour with him and he was feeling better, talking, laughing. The following day after we left to go home, he passed as he was speaking to his long lost beloved mother. The Bath VA Medical Center did absolutely everything to support us and keep my father alive as long as God permitted. They got him alcohol treatment, a place to live independently, medical and even aloud us to bury him on site with a full solute to his veteran status on the day of his funeral. I’ll never forget the trumpet sounding and the folding of the flag as the snow flakes sparkled in the sky. All that memory was because of the kindness of this medical center. They go above and beyond just like our soldiers. I will visit soon to share my experience with the staff and want them all to know how much they are appreciated! They know who you are, they recognize your face, and they treat every Veteran with the respect they have earned. Beyond the exceptional care, the facility itself is a masterclass in convenience and practical logistics. It might feel like a small hospital, but packed into those five stories is just about everything a Soldier could need, all under one roof. For anyone doing their reconnaissance before a visit, here is the Ground Truth on what to expect: All-Encompassing Clinics: Whether you need physical therapy, a routine eye exam, audiology and hearing services, podiatry, or even a trip to the dentist, it is all right here in the same building. Solid Food Service: It is not a massive corporate cafeteria, but rather a reliable short-order grill. They cook up basic, genuinely good food when you need to grab a bite between appointments. Strong Connectivity: You actually get good cell phone coverage inside the building, which is a rare and welcome luxury for a concrete medical facility. I firmly believe that feeling connected to the folks treating you, and knowing you are in a place where people genuinely care about your recovery, does just as much for a person's healing as the best medical equipment in the world could ever try to duplicate. Did acupuncture, at Christmas time the music program let us go Carroling around campus to all the other units , we built snowman, I was there for all major holidays that year and we was treated like a human being 😍 ALOT of ppl complain about not being able to talk to family but I actually found it a relief the first month I was there , I had crap I was dealing with (guilt ,shame , embarrassment )and the once a week I did call home those feelings of inadequacy would come back ten fold , but after the initial few weeks my confidence began to build and I learned forgiveness!!! I had never been in an addiction treatment center before, and White Deer Run was definitely an experience. I do believe I stayed the full 28 days. It's been so long I'm having a hard time remembering my actual treatment year. I would love to say I went to White deer Run and I stayed in recovery since. This was not the case however, I did go back out 😢. I learned a lot while I was there though, I learned that I could Not 🚫 escape the facility 😂. This might Not 🚫 make sense to some people reading this. This facility is almost impossible to leave once you have started the program for many reasons. I did not try to escape, but I watched many try. They returned very frustrated and tired as they walked back up the steep hill from the town below. The whole reason I really wanted to do a thank you or a shout out to WDR is because during my treatment I attended a meditation workshop. It was my first encounter with a monk. I sat down crossed my legs and then quickly prayed for the session to be over with. I was unhealthy and my legs had fallen deeply asleep, pins and needles 👀.
