I've never been to rehab before not knowing what to expect. I show up and it's on a very nice property with horses. I was impressed. I came in with a drug, alcohol, and suicidal attempts. I was broken. I learned I didn't really have a drug and alcohol problem I had a problem with myself, I didn't love myself, I didn't accept who I was. My therapist James Raburn was the best thing that happened to me in rehab. I've been with other therapist I didn't feel like they cared about me they were just doing their therapist thing, Not James he actually cared about me and listened to me. He showed how flawed my thoughts toward my self were And alot more. I recommend this place I think you will too! ethan sivertson 3 weeks ago This place was transformative for me. I self admitted to focus on working through a history of trauma, shame, and problematic sexual behavior. James Raburn was my therapist, and although I was unsure of our compatibility at first, he exceeded expectations and really helped me get the care I needed. We practiced EMDR, individual talk sessions, Couples betrayal therapy, as well as moving through the program each day which included multiple group sessions with the fellow residents, various 12-step meetings, and personal assignments. If you are thinking of giving this program a try, I would highly encourage it. It will require you to surrender what you think your recovery “needs” to look like, and really show up and challenge yourself and behavior in ways you haven’t. Some moments are frustrating - on weekends there are no therapists or professionals in house and you are under the care of a “tech” who is often younger than you. It requires humility, patience, and self determination to change and accept the flow of the program. But because of this place, I’ve seen incredible results in my wellbeing, self image, and emotional coping skills, as well as in the recovery of my relationship since graduating and I am grateful to the resident therapists - James, Jeremy, all the staff who helped make my recovery possible. Landon Swensen 1 month ago I just wanted to say that I loved Utah trauma and addiction center. They made me feel at home and safe. I loved spending time with the horses it always helped put me in a good mood. Jeremy was my therapist he was amazing. James was another therapist he always made groups interesting with his humor. Also an excellent therapist. I wish that we could have rode the horses, they were helpful to have either way. One thing I would like to recommend is a Chef. Our diets were left up to the residents to cook and they were not always the healthiest. They were none the less amazing and I would go there again if ever needed and I would highly recommend them as well. James Raburn was exactly what I needed. He pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me address all of my past while giving me the support I needed to grow from it and let it go. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a case number. I’m thinking of continuing sessions even after my required ones are done just so I can have that freedom of no judgment or anything when it comes to talking about personal life and feelings. For the people that walk into this place and already have their minds made up about what it’s going to be, of course it’s not going to be good. For those that come into the process with an open mind and positive attitude, I don’t see how this can’t be helpful. After years of intense trauma therapy with little progress, I had reached such a low point that our fire department’s mental health team recommended I come to Utah. When I agreed, I had no idea how I was going to get through six weeks of residential treatment—and by week three, I wasn’t sure there would be enough time. Clinicians and admissions worked together to ensure I could continue the work we started with their PHP and IOP programs, which I feel were crucial. After years of struggling with pain and confusion of trauma, on and off the job, they were able to listen, hold space and help me begin to understand, heal and grow. Deer Hollow takes a truly holistic approach to wellness, incorporating nutrition support, physical exercise, yoga, and community service alongside group and individual therapy. The structured, intensive schedule helped me build a routine that I still follow today. I also think it’s worth noting that many of these negative reviews come from people who left treatment early. Those experiences are absolutely valid, however they do not reflect what it’s like to move through the entire program and experience the full process. things often feel hardest before getting better. To preface this, my journey at New Roads has been anything but easy (for me or staff). When working through years of pain, fear, and maladaptive behaviors, emotions can be really overwhelming, and it’s easy to direct those feelings toward the treatment process itself. There were many moments pushed me FAR past my comfort zone and forced me to confront parts of myself I had been trying to avoid. I realize now that those moments weren’t signs that treatment wasn’t working, they were evidence that it was. I just wasn’t able to see that until after I graduated from the residential program. Before coming to New Roads, I had been to several different treatment centers. I always left feeling like another patient rather than an individual. I never felt understood and I struggled that anyone genuinely cared. By the time I arrived at New Roads in May 2024, I was emotionally done, impacted by trauma, and had almost no hope that this place would be any different. I felt so broken, misunderstood, and convinced i was beyond help. I honestly came to treatment because it was the box I was supposed to check, not because I believed it could actually help. I definitely wasn’t expecting healing. However, I found something I had never fully experienced before: people who truly cared. The staff (mostly) saw me as a person first, not a diagnosis or a presentation of symptoms. They held me accountable when needed and yet still showed compassion. There were days I wanted to leave and did. There were days i questioned the process and did, and times I caught myself directing my frustration with recovery toward the people who were trying to help me. I can see that those reactions were part of healing, not proof that treatment was failing. The support I received when it felt nearly impossible, gave me courage to keep going. Today, I can honestly say that choosing New Roads was one of the most rewarding decisions. It gave me way more than skills or a break from my struggles. It gave me hope, confidence, and the belief that I could build a life worth living. No treatment center is perfect, and everyone’s experience will be different. I don’t want to diminish anyone else’s story, because every person’s experience is real and deserves to be heard. At the same time, I think it’s equally important for people considering treatment to know that positive experiences exist too. My best friend had drove from Utah to pick me up because I had back to back overdoses and was close to dying every single day from an extreme GHB, methamphetamine, alcohol, and cocaine addiction, as well as heavy Xanax, klonopin, oxy, and Adderall abuse. I was so bad that he and a small group of my closest friends had to pack my apartment for me before I left, because I was so disconnected from myself and reality. For 20 years I have battled addiction off and on and was always missing the key to keep me in a place where I didn't WANT to do drugs anymore. When I got to Wasatch there was a culture shock and it was scary for me. Utah isn't as diverse as California (especially San Francisco) and there was a fear that I would be treated differently for being a gay man in a conservative state. This was not the case at Wasatch. I was greeted with love and kindness, acceptance and patience. I had a time I wanted to leave and they gave me the space to do so, alongside with the opportunity to questioning my own reasoning for it. This lead to a personal meeting with the owner of Wasatch, Mark that really showed me what This program was about. A type of love that I had never experienced from complete strangers that would soon blossom into a community of friends and family that have supported me throughout every step. Today, I am over a year sober. I have a good job, an apartment, I'm on the softball league, and I have 2 dear friends who even helped me with a car so that I could get to work and rebuild my life. I have rekindled relationships and transformed my mind, body, and spirit. This program works if you are willing to work for it too. They will show you so many variations of therapy that will explain how addiction works in the brain, a personalized therapist will challenge you to go deeper in yourself than you ever wanted, and the experiential therapy will reconnect you with life and nature. The food is great, the staff is loving and comes from the heart, and it is a safe place to grow bigger than you could ever imagine.
