Back2Basics Outdoor Adventure Therapy is a drug and alcohol rehab in Flagstaff, Arizona. This facility offers residential addiction treatment and sober living for adult men aged 18 through 35. This Back2Basics residential program provides a combination of counseling, addiction treatment, and outdoor recreation activities. Residents engage in hands-
Back2Basics saved my life and helped me to become my old self again. When I showed up I was scared, sad, and going through withdrawals. The staff were so understanding and empathetic and taught me coping strategies to regulate myself and get through the hard part while reassuring me that I was right where I needed to be. I was referred to Back2Basics by a family friend who had a loved one go through the program and they informed me of its great success and spoke very highly of it; furthermore I spoke with a lot of the staff on the phone before arriving, many of whom have been through the Back2Basics program and have rebuilt their lives thanks to its efficacy. Back2Basics is not like other treatment programs, it consists of a holistic treatment plan to heal clients emotionally, physically, and spiritually. One aspect of Back2Basics I did not foresee but found incredibly beneficial was its focus on restructuring my preoccupation with short-term reward by separating me from my phone and limiting access to technology. Because of this, I had to relearn how to sit with my own thoughts without distraction, and how to pass the time in healthy and engaging ways (reading books, playing guitar, socializing with other clients, playing games, meditating, working out). With a large kitchen and fresh groceries every week, us clients were able to prepare meals with fresh protein and produce, which meant proper nutrition for a healthy body. Ian, Back2Basics' own culinary specialist, would come to the property multiple times a week to cook great dinners with us and give us nutrition and fitness advice. Back2Basics also brought us to the gym every day so we could improve our fitness and undo the damage of addiction. I left the program leaner, stronger, and healthier. One of the highlights of Back2Basics was our weekends. With two knowledgeable outdoor guides, Andrew and Colin, we spent every weekend out in nature: hiking, swimming, camping, and exploring. Discovering all the beauty of Arizona while bonding with the other clients was pivotal to my recovery, and Back2Basics prepares you for all this with excellent equipment that you get to keep upon program completion. When we weren't at the gym or on outdoor adventures, the week was structured with plenty of therapy and groups to focus on recovery and healing. HUGE shoutout to Bethany, Natalie, and Keelyn, our program clinicians, who showed up everyday to help us clients heal and resolve our trauma. I worked with Bethany specifically doing one-on-one therapy; she helped me focus on and heal trauma I've been struggling with for decades and met me with a level of empathy and compassion that was crucial for me in my recovery. Natalie led fantastic groups that allowed me and other clients to discuss our struggles with one another and work together on solutions. Keelyn led mindfulness exercises to help us develop keen awareness of our bodies and our needs while giving excellent clinical perspectives and solutions. Thanks to all of their expertise I was able to walk away from the program with more self-assuredness, peace, and confidence that I could handle life's stresses on my own out in the real world. Between all these activities our house managers, Cade, Reed, Ian, Dave, Brady, and Manny, connected with us and helped us navigate the day-to-day struggles by providing excellent leadership and friendship. The staff at Back2Basics made me feel truly cared for, and I am so grateful that I got to be surrounded by such kind and authentic people during my stay. Roy, the founder of Back2Basics, is an all-around stand up human. He always checked on us guys, and I always felt like he was genuinely interested in each and every one of our recoveries. Special thanks also to Suzie for her friendly demeanor and conversation while on-site, it was always nice chatting with you while we were all cooking in the kitchen. I would enthusiastically recommend this program to anyone struggling with addiction, and have made connections that have changed me fundamentally and made my life better. Thank you!

As a nurse and professional in the behavioral health field, I have been deeply impressed by the work being done at Back 2 Basics. The program provides young men with a rare combination of opportunities—healing, practical life skills, and the stability that is often missing in their lives. What stands out most is the balance between clinical care and real-world development. Back 2 Basics doesn’t just focus on treatment—it empowers clients to learn accountability, independence, and the skills they’ll need to succeed long after they leave the program. Watching men grow in confidence as they take ownership of their recovery and build a foundation for the future is incredibly inspiring. For families and professionals alike, it’s reassuring to know there is a program that treats people with dignity, structure, and compassion. Back 2 Basics is giving young men more than recovery—it’s giving them the tools and support to rebuild their lives.

As someone who works daily with men struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders, I refer clients to Back2Basics with full confidence. This program isn’t just another treatment center—it’s a transformational environment rooted in real clinical expertise, integrity, and real-life skill building. From the start, Back2Basics impresses with its balance of evidence-based clinical care and holistic healing. Their residential program combines individual therapy, group work, dual diagnosis support, and trauma-informed care—all delivered by a deeply capable team led by seasoned clinical leadership. Their emphasis on authentic, non-institutional connection ensures clients feel seen and heard. One of the most unique strengths of Back2Basics is their integration of outdoor adventure and real-world life skills—hiking, backpacking, cooking, budgeting, vocational guidance. These components aren’t optional add-ons; they are central to helping young men not just stay sober but build resilience, confidence, and self-reliance. Family involvement is another area where Back2Basics excels. As a referrer, I’ve seen how keeping loved ones educated, engaged, and part of the recovery journey reduces anxiety for everyone involved, helps with accountability, and contributes to sustained outcomes. Finally, the commitment to continuity—transitioning into sober living, aftercare, relapse prevention—is vital. Too many programs fall off at discharge; Back2Basics makes sure the gains made during treatment translate into daily life. In short: as a professional who refers clients, I consider Back2Basics to be a top choice for young men who need more than just detox or short-term support. They deliver a full rehabilitation journey designed for lasting change. 5 stars without hesitation.

I've bin with southwest for about 10 years, specifically this location in their MAT program, the change this place has made this last year is major! The new DR. Sean is a major change from the previous DR that was there. Sean understands not everything is black and white and actually listens to you when you tell him like hey this isn't working can we try something else's, on top of actually listening to your concerns about medication he actually cares about your recovery as much as you do, I have not had one DR. Actually try to help when I said I want to be done with MAT meds, the last DR'S would basically set you up for failure so you will have to come back and be stuck. Sean will actually help you and not abandon you through the process of getting off MAT meds.He has helped this place become more hopeful for me. You can tell he cares.... and thats the part that this clinic was missing. Southwest please hold on to this DR close. He is litterly what makes the MAT program a true recovery program.

During MAT, FDA-approved medications are combined with mental health counseling to address the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of addiction. The counseling portion of the program helps people work through the underlying issues associated with their addiction, while the medication helps people more easily withdraw from addictive substances.
I highly recommend Northern AZ Substance Abuse Services! I just had a MVD assessment done by the owner and Certified Counselor Robert Lovett. He is very upfront, open and honest about everything. He shows his compassion, knowledge and professionalism throughout the entire process. I can not say enough good things about this business. Well we had the unfortunate pleasure of visiting the Verde Valley Medical Center again today with my wife. She is struggling with her ability to stand without falling and she has other mental issues that are starting to develop. Last time we were at Verde Valley Medical they misdiagnosed my wife with drug abuse instead of a very clear mental confusion situation. My wife is 72 years old and has never taken drugs in her life. Many hospitals are uneducated about kratom. This visit was very nice! Everybody had smiles on their faces and we're dressed very neatly. The main treating doctor was dressed very nicely and was very professional. Between everybody there, they made the visit a pleasant experience for a non pleasant experience if you know what I mean. Thank you Verde Valley Medical for treating us like patients instead of drug abusers. That will always go a long ways in my book. BTW...we are starting to find that my wife has very serious neurological issues associated with the fall she had about a year and a half ago.

On July 26, 2025 I arrived at the Verde Valley Medical Center around 3 PM. Within 10 minutes I was ushered into their evaluation area where my vitals and an x-ray was taken. Immediately afterwards I was placed in a nicely appointed room where the nursing team made me very comfortable with warm towels and pain meds since I was shaking uncontrollably. This was the beginning of a top-notch emergency gallbladder removal experience. After a ultrasound & in less than 3 hours Dr. Nagaraj advised me the I needed surgery to remove my gall bladder which took place the next day. Next day the surgical nurse prepped me & assured me that Drs. Faulkner & Nagaraj would be the ones he would want to do his surgery. Afterwords the recovery room team as well as the team that handled my comfort that night were superb. Each shift’s caretakers worked together as a team whose main focus was my comfort and speedy recovery. One super efficient nurse from Virginia helped with the nausea and medications I needed to take. Another sweet nursing student worked tirelessly all night helping me to try & find a restful position. And, a kind & caring nurse’s aide from Minnesota brought humor to my otherwise awkward hospital gown situation. All in all the medical team that cared for me was the best. We drove an extra 30 minutes from Munds Park to Cottonwood as we realized that I’d wait for hours in Flagstaff’s ER. Best decision ever!

I don’t remember it being like any of these reviews. I saw things I never would’ve seen if I had not been placed there. The town of Jerome, the copper mines, we saw the Grand Canyon at least 6 times when I was there. The staff Ms. Burgess taught me to crochet. When I started to learn anll the other girls were interested and did as well. All the other staff members were like hippies, not like anything I had experienced in Cincinnati Ohio at treatment centers. So, nice. I didn’t like the psychiatrist much but in all it was an adventure there. I now have two companies. Lydia’s Lawncare and Empowered Lady Llc here in Cincinnati Ohio. Things may have changed since I was there but I don’t have bad memories of this facility.

Working with the B2B staff made it really easy for our family to participate in our loved ones successful recovery. From day one Roy answered all our questions and gave us clear options for the family to consider. What drew us to B2B was the outdoor part-it was important for us to find a safe space that didn’t feel like a cold hospital environment. It was encouraging for us to see how our loved one was working on the steps towards sobriety while also connecting with land. The program itself was well developed involving different phases that also helped build life skills ➕➕➕ major plus for our family. The B2B staff was always responsive and went above and beyond to keep our family informed. We would recommend B2B to any family who wants a modern approach to healthy living.

The care and courtesy of this medical center is very bad, I'm not sure if the nurses and doctors really are people trained and certified to perform their function, because it seems that they don't know what they are doing. The waiting time is very long, I was attended by a nurse but she was very rude, she said she couldn't do anything for me. Only as a last resort would I recommend this place.

We were fortunate enough to have three of the young men from U-Turn for Christ come and clear our yard of weeds and then move gravel off the yard to lay down a weed barrier (after the handyman we hired didn't bother to put one down when he spread the 1" gravel). I wish I could rate this place more than 5 stars! Not only do they do their job right but they are really professional here! I've only had a bad experience on my first visit with a therapist but they fixed that right away for me and changed my therapist which I'm glad they did. I am not that type to open up about my feelings but Chrissy was really helpful and made me feel comfortable right away, it made it seem like if I've known her for years so I definitely recommend her. When I was going through my hard times they were always their for me to talk to someone which was really helpful!

This place absolutely horrid. They do not feed the patients, speak and talk down to them, and treat them like animals. They either pump you full of medication, or nothing at all. Never have witnessed such unprofessionalism and cruelty towards humans who are seeking mental health servicces in a time of crisis. The nurses think they run the facility and think they should be obeyed. They curse out patients, yell at them, and even make them cry. If you don't obey them, they will tranquilize you- i witnessed this with my own eyes. As someone who works in the mental health field, I have NEVER been so appalled by a facility. There are no windows and you never know what day it is. It is quite literally hell on earth. This NEEDS to be investigated, and honestly shut down. This facility should be ashamed of themselves and how they "treat". Treat humans with respect, it's not hard. Only one water dispenser, was about 80 ounces for about 50 people, to give you an idea.
