I was broken, strung out, withdrawing from multiple different substances, and alcohol. 6 years previous to that I had lived my life carelessly, recklessly, and with not much concern for my own life. Leading to 3 overdoses, multiple attempts on my life from others, always coming and going in people's lives, homelessness, institutions, and juvenile detention. And hurting the ones closest to me without even realizing it. So when I walked into ICFR that morning with my crazy grown out hair and beard, nothing but a shirt and a pair of shorts to my name. I didn't expect anyone to want anything to do with me. I had anger issues, trust issues, abandonment issues. I was in psychosis from the drugs and my bipolar 1. But when I first got there I met Max for the first time. The owner and at the time, executive director of the facility. He sat with me, looked me in the eyes and told me he was glad I was here. It was the first time in a long time I genuinely felt compassion from someone else. Then I did my intake and met Austin Hale, Austin took me under his wing and was there for me that whole time I was there the first time. Him, Roxanne, Kayla, Bella, Ashley, Liz, and Dino. They all saved my life. And many more people there, not only staff but clients. The group therapy we do there really gives everyone an opportunity to get to know one another and form Bonds with each other. That make it possible for us to have each other's backs and see life from different perspectives. I've also done php at ICFR south bend. Justin, Josh, Tammy, Tyler, Taylor. All of them work so hard and make the house feel like a team and supported. Outings on Sundays. Groups at the facility throughout the week. Connor who was a facilitator but is now a therapist is an extremely hard worker and amazing supporter. Same with Amy. Susie, and Candace are amazing client care coordinators. They truly do care. Melissa and Faith, have looked out for me and made it possible through their patience and grace towards me, for me to grow and change as times gone by. All the techs are amazing, Christina, Heather, Kaylie, Natasha, Ya Ya, Rachel, Sam, Kelsey, Conner, Chris, Lucas, Will. The therapists are amazing, Robert, Melissa, Connor. The nurse practitioners, Dawn, Liz, Gina, always listen and I feel heard and I trust them all. The alumni coordinators, Zach, Kaylie, and Shane really do help guide people after discharge and help them come back if needed. The haircut Woman, Erica, awesome to talk to and does such a great job! So does all the kitchen and janitorial staff. If not for ICFR South Bend, there would be no Christian Cornelis. If you need help, I can honestly urge you to give them a chance. You deserve the chance. I'm pleased to say that there has been many good changes at Oaklawn. I've been going here off and on in the 40+ years since I was in high school (back when it was known as Madison Center), and 99% of the psychiatrists and counselors have always been very good. Though they are not immune from their own confirmation bias. Unfortunately, even though I like most of them, frontline staff has been in the past unsympathetic and cruel. When you're mentally ill, specifically having Major Depressive Disorder, doing anything at all can seem like an impossible task. Just getting out of bed can be terrifying and seem to have no point. And after you had to fight yourself and the world to get there, being required to fight for yourself and the respect everyone deserves, in a place where they're supposed to be there to help people with mental illnesses, is really not just inappropriate but unforgivable. Fortunately, management is approachable, and will listen. At least they have to me, and have thanked me for bringing certain issues to their attention. Even writing me a letter a week or so after we spoke. I don't work there, and I only know the things that I've seen and experienced firsthand, but it seems like a much friendlier place to work, less sterile. Which I'm sure positively affects the frontline staffs attitudes. And though frontline staff can seem clickish, and move to defend themselves as a group when one is criticized by a patient, say by gaslighting that patient, management is aware that that is inappropriate. In the 5 years since my previous review, I only recall one single negative experience. ================ Older Review from 2020: A decent place for low cost psychiatric care. But the front desk staff in the Physicians floor can be extraordinary rude and unsympathetic. Especially if you mention any displeasure with Oaklawn's rules, they seem to take it as a personal insult, and really need to get a job outside of psychiatric care, because they are not suited for it. They are also discouraging when you come to make an appointment, or pick up patient assistance medications, Etc. They often don't know what they're talking about, so don't let them discourage you from what you're trying to do and insist that they pass on messages to the people and doctors you are trying to contact. Todd Buysse 3 years ago As of this writing I have a years experience with this location and program so will try and clarify things a bit. An important thing to understand is that each house is independent and ran by the current residents under guidelines set forth by its area chapter which in turn is governed by the state chapter then national program. Each house is run democratically by its residents with a persons power being in their vote. I feel most of the negative reviews I've heard are from those who relapsed or who routinely or egregiously violated rules and were kicked out. The only violations that allow for immediate expulsion are relapse, violence, or those of a potentially criminal nature. This program is not a good fit for everyone as it is more of a peer supported independent living type situation. It is not as rigidly governed as many halfway houses and is better suited for those comfortable in recovery and capable of living independently but still desiring some structure and guidance. As for Emyla specifically I would say it is a great location. It is near downtown with Leeper Park and the river nearly next door. The residents tend to be easy going and get along well. The house is big with 3 full baths, 3 kitchens, and 2 living rooms. It is worth looking into the place to see if it is for you but remember it is not for everyone. H. R. (Hank) 5 years ago	4

Even though I was court ordered I quickly realized this place has been helpful. In my case I'm learning more than just helpful tips to avoid the charge that brought me here. I wish I would've known about this place years ago. For me C.P.R. has been organized with my paperwork. They have been friendly, and personal, and a lot of the people I've met here I've enjoyed the friendship. I've seen people come here that clearly aren't ready to change, and they don't. They have bad attitudes the whole time, and they're rude to staff. It's sad, but you can't change anyone, you can provide them helpful tools though. The best part of this place?
