I was referred here from a previous facility due to a change in coverage I had. I had no idea where in Maryland I was going but that didn’t matter, they came to me and others states away, provided transportation or would have paid for an uber. Huge relief.
I came to an almost large mansion like building that had chefs on staff, access to doctors and nurses 24/7, a bed and hot shower. Exactly what I needed for where I was in life, if I had those I was doing better than I was.
When it comes to curriculum and facilities, they have the best organized classes and group structure I and others who told me form experience they have seen. We have a lot of fun, a lot of freedom in choice of what I NEED in my recovery. Outings after your reach a certain point in the program. Entertainment at night and weekend.
I pray whoever see’s this and has doubts or question should they come or even do they need to, just come. Let them take over and manage your life for a little bit and you will be paid 10 fold in you ROI.

Where to even start, my experience there was amazing. The staff always treated me with the utmost respect, support, and care. The patients were the most supportive people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. Everyone there made me feel safe, secure, and cared for. Special shoutout to Darryl, Jessica, Antoine H, (who always had a moment for me, thank you Sir), the detox unit nurses and especially the BHTs who showed me so much support and love. I can’t recommend this facility enough. They hold their staff to a standard and it shows.

The program and support is great, but once you finish no resources are provided. No follow-up with patients. They are all about profit. The providers can't even provide outside resources. This should be a warning sign they are out to make money.

I had a great experience and this was my 4th treatment center. It’s not a cookie cutter program and felt very comfortable and welcomed. Since I left I’m still involved with the stuff they do in after care and alumni activities which are great ways to stay connected to a lot of people who truly are still putting in the work to stay sober and a lot of us have become close friends and hang out a few times a week. It’s not uptight like a lot of places which is very helpful in early recovery, the music aspect is great even if you don’t play any instruments, and the housing setup is great as well. The rules are pretty simple. No vaping inside (at the center) and you can’t have your phone during group lol pretty reasonable. Otherwise there’s still a sense of normalcy. Highly recommend to anyone who’s ready to make that 1st big step! I was a bit apprehensive at first and couldn’t be more grateful that I did it. I haven’t felt this good in 20 years!

They are the best substance abuse help i have ever had, and I have had my share. They always take care of me. They listen to me and its not just a cookie cut type of style where one style fits all its what fits me. I love it and I will always come here even when I'm done with my meds. Maybel always makes me laugh and it messes with my blood pressure all the time (that's my excuse). Dona always has on fresh kicks and I'm jealous. Stephanie will always make sure I'm good, making sure I take care of my self. She really cares which is rare in my experience. Fatima digs and makes me deal when I don't want when I know I need to. I have taken several program participants to various medical and mental health appointments over the years both in Virginia and in Maryland and was hands down super impressed with the staff at the CSB juvenile, adult, and emergency services. There was quite a wait for emergency services but each department communicated with each other and was so polite. Brian Stewart is one of the few names that we caught but he was phenomenal. The staff checked on us, fed us, and gave us blankets. We saw them touching base with some individuals who were clearly in crisis and they were just so patient and caring. Dr. Smith was our emergency services doc and I wish he could see people regularly because he was funny and he made my program participant feel heard. I have been with an individual to the primary care as well and enjoyed the collaboration with DO Pristell.

My husband suffered PTSD for many years. It was left undiagnosed and mistreated for a long period of time. It took a lot of trials and tribulations for him and the loved ones involved, especially with me being I was the closest one to him and was susceptible to his symptoms. I also started picking up his symptoms, like I was suffering from it as well. Kinda like second-hand smoking. tHe went to a couple of recovery center which did not help him at all. But when he went to the IAFF COE, it was like a switch was turned on. It took a while for the treatment to really take effect or to see any results. But he made it through. I can't begin to express the gratefulness the family has. I wish I would have found a way for him to get there sooner and start his treatment. I was following the center since the beginning. But things happen a reason. When the day came that he was ready to feel alive again, you all helped him find his life again. I am now also finally starting my healing process.

My favorite thrift store in the area! Lines get long on sale days which can be a pain if you're someone who's usually only buying a couple things, but they move relatively quick. The home goods are especially reasonably priced.
The best part is the donation team. 0 hassle and I can always stop by really quick to donate a ton of stuff or just a few things. Best hours in the area, no appointments needed for smaller things (you just pull up and drive through), I'm in and out really fast, and am always offered a receipt. They're very kind and helpful!

I have great things to say about BHG! From the case workers to the whole staff really!!! Medical, front desk, and even security guards. The whole team on Marion Barry SE Center is so wonderful at what they do you can tell when a facility cares about their clients and it's more than just a job for them. They all sincerely care for the clients to maintain sobriety and are willing to do whatever it takes to help you achieve that goal. Dr. Doan is always so helpful and willing to teach structure and give support. Ms. Dayna Woods is the best sobriety coach in the world with the most patience and care concern wanting me to reach my potential one hundred and ten percent. Ms. Tonya is so educational I learn something new every session with her groups. Mr. Tim always so supportive. Ms. Donna, Ms. Tamara, Mr. Kioshu the front desk support and all the case workers the dosing nurses I have something positive to say about every worker there! It's a big supportive family that I couldn't do without on my path to sobriety and wouldn't want to do without them all!!! So I say a huge thank you for everything every single one of you the staff at BHG!!!! Cause without you there would be no me! Sincerely, Melissa Dispaltro #6666

Our daughter was in desperate need of help. Her ED had gotten into a dangerous zone. Out patient therapy was just not enough to bridge the gap for us. We began looking for facilities and this one was semi close. Leaving your child can be very difficult and reading reviews I felt somewhat comfortable with this place.
Ilida was really easy to work with. When we arrived, she went through all of the initial paperwork with us and made sure we understood everything before signing. While there our daughter was able to gain weight and understand her relationship with her body image and understand how her eating disorder affected that. The staff was great and quickly developed relationships that were therapeutic with my daughter- helping her use her DBT skills when she would get upset. As a mom, it does your heart good to know that when your child is upset, there is someone there to comfort them when you can’t. She went in having withdrawn into herself, no longer enjoying activities she had previously enjoyed, and as previously mentioned, very sick. She discharged a healthy, happy kiddo! Enjoying activities she hadn’t enjoyed in a long time!
The only negative comments I have is that the house was in somewhat of a transition of staff upon our arrival. Our daughter was assigned a virtual therapist & virtual dietician. While both of these individuals were great, we would have much preferred in person facilitation. There were some lapses of communication a few times, but again, staff was/is in transition. When it’s brought to their attention, they are quick to rectify this.
At the end of the day, the good definitely outweighs the “bad” and if I had to do it all over again, I would send her there without hesitation. Actually at discharge, our daughter was in tears because while she wanted to come home, she was going to miss several of the staff!

Alexandria, VA | At Sandstone Care Alexandria, we help teens, young adults, and their families overcome challenges with drugs, alcohol, mental health issues, trauma, and addiction in Alexandria, Virginia. At our Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center, we focus on not only helping individuals overcome substance use, addiction, and co-occurring mental health conditions but al | Treatments Programs Payment Options | Family Group: Family Group was a good way to find time to explore my issues with my family / loved ones, and allowed them to show support in a safe environment. The timing usually worked out so that people with jobs could make it in however there were some scheduling issues early on (due to staff changes) which were resolved.
IOP: IOP was a group therapy experience for people of my age range 18-35. Having a community of non judgemental people who may be experiencing similar things and, being able to find solice or advice in the group allowed for personal reflection and growth.
Individual therapy: Personally I enjoyed individual therapy, just a 1 on 1 where you can work out your own problems with your therapist. Sandstone has it scheduled for once every two weeks which I personally felt wasn't enough but, once my feelings were known I was told I could change the schedule which I appreciated.
Transportation: Transportation can be provided which I used and is safe and reliable. It was helpful for me to get myself on a schedule.
Snacks and refreshments: Snacks can be provided but sometimes (due to shortage in supply, not due to staff) snacks are not always available. However refreshments such as water coffee and tea are always available and are helpful.
Psychoeducation: This was my first sort of therapy experience ever in my life and I learned a lot about myself and my own brain. Learning how to combat negative thoughts and my own tendencies about reading people has been helpful towards my growth as a human being.
Overall I believe sandstone was a great program. But if you are looking to come know that you will only get out as much as you put in. So if you come in unwilling to learn and with a negative attitude, your results might not be as great as if you are ready and willing to change your life.
Shout-out to all the staff (as of 08/27/26) these guys are pretty cool.👍

Sandstone was the best long term-therapeutic experience I’ve ever had. Out of dozens of experiences, my therapist Elizabeth Krug, is likely the best therapist I’ve ever had. Through CBT, group therapy, and personal sessions, I thrived. Sandstone is a great and worthy practice.
