My experience at Akua orange was amazing. It is a thoughtful supportive and friendly program that heals and teaches at the same time. I could not be where I am now in my recovery without the amazing staff in residential including the house staff, counselors, case managers and AKUA alumni staff. Thank you for everything AKUA Strong

Simply put AKUA saved my life. The moment I walked in the front door I knew that it was going to be the turning point for me. I’m not being melodramatic when I say that I knew in my heart that it was going to be the crossroads where I’d begin a new path. The staff are like family members and dear friends who circle around you when you’re sick and hold you up and love and support you until you can walk again. The fact that it’s a treatment facility and a therapeutic community withstanding there’s just something about the location there on Orange Avenue that is very special. It’s close to rivers and woods and fields and just feels like a place where healing is done and where someone can start over. I grew up in Hawaii and even the name means something very poignant to me. In Hawaiian ‘Akua’ means spirit and is exactly what I’d lost and thought was gone forever just prior to coming to Akua. There is no way that in this life I can ever pay back what was given to me there if I spend every single moment from now up until my last breath working as hard as I can. But I’m certainly going to try. I left a rock in the back garden which says on it, ‘You will find your way out of the darkness’ which was what I found written on a note left on my mother’s refrigerator when I was cleaning her house the day after she’d passed. That statement really sums it up for me and my experience while I was there at AKUA finding my way back home. I didn’t just find my way out of the darkness I was given the gift of being able to given it back and remind those that I give it to to always remember to give it back after you find your way out. To always be of service and to help someone else find their way out of the darkness.

This was not my first inpatient rehabilitation for mental health, but this was first time at Akua for mental health. By far the best care I’ve received. I was amazed at their holistic approach and how passionate and extremely helpful every staff member is! Every staff member…I mean every single staff member on every shift helped me with one on one talks, exercises, suggestions, and active listening. The therapist I had was amazing and empathetic to my needs while doing Brain Spotting. I recommend this place to anyone who needs care, whether it’s addiction and/or mental health.

Akua Mental Health was a lifesaver for me. I was there about a year ago for a suicide attempt. The therapist and staff really helped me come to terms with why I did what I did and all the thoughts I had. I continue to go to the alumni meetings and check in on a monthly basis with all the amazing friends I met there. I can’t thank the staff for all the hard they put in and the they took to dig deep with me. They truly are the best and I would recommend anyone who is suffering from any type of mental health issues to go to Akua and see for yourself. You will be amazed. Thank you Akua for saving me!
