My husband was a patient 5 times maybe more I lose track. In hospital staff was excellent only once did we have a problem. The nurse didn't dress his wound just wrapped gauze around it after doc visited to check wound. This gauze wrap stayed that way on evening and night shift. Day shift hadn't looked at it when I got there so I dressed the wound myself. Also his urinal had spilled on night shift and the nurse said she would call housekeeper but no one ever come to clean a towel was laid over it. But they have been great all the other times. In fact they have saved his life twice. I have been a patient most recently during New Years 2025. They did try to send me home and I told them I am not ready. I kept dropping 02. I did the walk test and thought I was going to pass out. Therapist said no my 02 level dropped on exertion. I did go home the next day. Diagnosed with CHF and COPD. But test showed common cold. Care was excellent but to rushed to discharge. Now my true complaint. The ER doctor is the rudest worst bedside manner I have ever encountered. I was sick and went to ER before my admission. Was there 7 hours with no one telling me what they even thought. I finally asked nurse to take needle out because I was leaving. He said wait I will get doctor to come talk to you. 30 minutes later I left took IV out myself. The next week I need back in ER. I couldn't get my breath. I think I had a mild heart attack on Sunday. But wouldn't go because I was afraid I get same doc and the chest pain eased then went away. On Monday morning went to ER. Same doctor. I asked for nurse practitioner. She admitted me. At home my 02 was high 50s to low 60s not sure at ER. I was to sick to care and confused. I am not sure of ER doctor name. Nurse told me he was really smart but I am telling you no beside manner and I am not sure he cares. Doesn't listen to patient. We travel a long way to get medical care. Doctors are great, my husband goes to wound center and they are awesome. This would be the perfect hospital if you changed ER practices. Things happen we are all human. I am an old nurse and worked administration in long term care as administrator for 40 yrs. I understand. But I hate going to this ER and don't want to be in any other hospital. Please fix. I kept waiting for someone to call about why I left er no one called. And today stumbled on this site. While looking for dermatologist connected to BJC. I see I am not the only one that has had ER problems. A once was told he was medical director of ER. I don't know.

And whatsoever I shall see or hear in the course of my profession, as well as outside my profession in my intercourse with men, if it be what should not be published abroad, I will never divulge, holding such things to be holy secrets.
Now if I carry out this oath, and break it not, may I gain for ever reputation among all men for my life and for my art; but if I break it and forswear myself, may the opposite befall me.[3]
— Translation by W.H.S. Jones”
So I was an Xray tech in the SE ER in the 90s before I became disabled & I have a very good understanding of medical ethics.
I lost a kidney in 2000 to renal cancer. In 2006, the nephrectomy scar on my right side herniated, involving my liver. I was hospitalized and surgeon Dr Joseph McCadams was called in. Laparoscopic hernia surgery was scheduled for July 2006 on a Friday, by Sunday post op, my right side was swelling and turning red. I was refused an appointment when I called his office the next day & ended up in the ER the next day. They called him and he instructed them to send me home, that I was fine. I called his office the next day, and again was refused an appointment, being told I would have to wait for the post op appointment already set for the following week.
The pain was becoming unbearable & I started running a fever so I went back to the ER & was admitted, Dr McCadams later appeared in my room in the ER, angry that I’d been admitted and telling me not to expect any drugs from him.
He came to my doorway in the hospital each morning, mocking me for crying in pain. He gave me no fluids & insufficient antibiotics, I felt so alone and scared. Post op patients are so vulnerable, and to be verbally abused and mocked by the very person who did this to me was life altering. I ended up leaving ama & had my elderly parents drive me to St. Louis, to SLU ER where I was quickly surrounded by people, admitted and scheduled for emergency surgery the next morning. I spent the night with 4 IV machines trying to rehydrate me and pumping me full of antibiotics. I was at SLU for nearly a month after that, my surgeon told he had not expected me to live & that the care I had experienced under Dr McCadams care was very poor. The infection damaged my pancreas, leaving me with chronic pancreatitis for 5 years and even now, I live with pancreatic insufficiency. I have severe right side muscle damage and use a walker if I have to walk very far.
I did report him to the state medical board once I recovered enough from the resulting PTSD but it was likely too late, many years had passed by then. I can’t recommend this person at all, he can be quite abusive to vulnerable patients. I had left my review on Dr McCadams Google reviews many years ago but when he moved to Mercy from the clinic, he had his Google reviews turned off, effectly deleting all the bad reviews, including mine. That's why I'm putting it here on the hospital page, I don't want anyone to suffer the way I did from his abuse. Be safe out there.
Edit: To Mercy staff, I have responded to your request that I email you months ago on a different post, you don't respond back so there's no point in doing it again.

N.P Miles, Kaitlyn, and Dr. Cooper have been absolutely amazing from day 1. N.P. Miles listens, plans, and makes adjustments to meds when something is feeling off or if there's a crisis going on in my life (too many to count). She thoroughly explains my care plan in a way that I can understand. You can tell that they genuinely care about the patient's well-being in this office. It's definitely a rare find these days. I don't think that I would have gotten through my "getting shot crisis," or any other "crisis," for that matter, without the care that this office has given me.
