As a first-gen immigrant and caregiver, I was nervous seeking help, but Gateway Foundation Carbondale felt safe. Their outpatient program really worked for my busy life. However, an agreement was reached to continue antibiotic treatment at home, with adjustments as needed upon receiving the culture results. Notably, the civilian hospital in southern Illinois provides exceptional care to veterans, complementing the outstanding services offered by the VA hospital in Marion, IL. Parking out front is crowded. Front desk is helpful. Layout can be challenging as will all hospitals that have grown and done multiple expansions. Care seems to be pretty good. I haven't heard many complaints or praises. Patients seem to be "content."

I was an Xray tech in the SE ER in the 90s before I became disabled, I then lost a kidney in 2000 to renal cancer. In 2006, the nephrectomy scar on my right side herniated, involving my liver. I was hospitalized and surgeon Dr Joseph McCadams was called in. Laparoscopic hernia surgery was scheduled for July 2006 on a Friday, by Sunday post op, my right side was swelling and turning red. I was refused an appointment when I called his office the next day & ended up in the ER the next day. They called him and he instructed them to send me home, that I was fine. I called his office the next day, and again was refused an appointment, being told I would have to wait for the post op appointment already set for the following week.
The pain was becoming unbearable & I started running a fever so I went back to the ER & was admitted, Dr McCadams later appeared in my room in the ER, angry that I’d been admitted and telling me not to expect any drugs from him.
He came to my doorway in the hospital each morning, mocking me for crying in pain. He gave me no fluids & insufficient antibiotics, I felt so alone and scared. Post op patients are so vulnerable, and to be verbally abused and mocked by the very person who did this to me was life altering. I ended up leaving ama & had my elderly parents drive me to St. Louis, to SLU ER where I was quickly surrounded by people, admitted and scheduled for emergency surgery the next morning. I spent the night with 4 IV machines trying to rehydrate me and pumping me full of antibiotics. I was at SLU for nearly a month after that, my surgeon told he had not expected me to live & that the care I had experienced under Dr McCadams care was very poor. The infection damaged my pancreas, leaving me with chronic pancreatitis for 5 years and even now, I live with pancreatic insufficiency. I have severe right side muscle damage and use a walker if I have to walk very far.
I did report him to the state medical board once I recovered enough from the resulting PTSD but it was likely too late, many years had passed by then. I can’t recommend this person at all, he can be quite abusive to vulnerable patients. I had left my review on Dr McCadams Google reviews many years ago but when he moved to Mercy from the clinic, he had his Google reviews turned off, effectly deleting all the bad reviews, including mine. That's why I'm putting it here on the hospital page, I don't want anyone to suffer the way I did from his abuse. Be safe out there

They are warm and welcoming. I did not feel judge or uncomfortable speaking to them.
My only complaint was having to wait a year to start seeing the Therapist, however I was able to start seeing my Psychiatrist right away.
Also I use the pharmacy at the CCC, Genoa. The keep track of my prescriptions and will refill them when needed and let me know they are ready to pick up. I never have to work about running out if I forget to get the refill.

I ain’t gonna lie I did not like going to counseling my first go round. I wasn’t ready for the help. The 2nd time i loved going. & between both times my counselor did act differently because they could see that I was trying vs before when I was not. & I understand completely why I got different vibes. I didn’t want help. then when I did they all helped me. I see some reviews saying staff was rude ect. Personally not once was anyone just rude to me. Now did some make it clear they seen threw my bull, yup. As she should have! absolutely recommend going there if you genuinely want help! If you do not want help and ur there for other reasons they wil be able to tell. I even ended up homeless for 5 months, basically like my little sister died, I missed counseling sooo much & they still worked with me & tried to help even tho they could have kicked me out for not going only cuz they knew I was actually trying. I have mad love for all these people after round 2. Before tho I did not at all. basically ur vibe depends on the vibe you will get. but it wouldn’t be helpful for them to just act like they didn’t notice ur not trying.

I went there twice. The first time was back in December and the second time was in January. The first time was horrible the first night I didn’t sleep at all. The workers there seemed professional and helpful. The only issue I had was the lack of communication to the outside world. If your like me then your always busy so being locked in a building that only lets you use the phone at 5pm did me more harm then good. I will admit there are a few employees who genuinely don’t care about you. There is only one licensed physiatrist there and he didn’t seem to care to chit chat with his patients. When I was there I enjoyed playing cards and watching tv with the other patients they were really good people and it saddens me to see such pure and good people struggle with mental illnesses. There wasn’t much to do except wake up take meds and eat. At the end of each day we had group therapy. The food was great and plentiful and the meds really evened out my moods and made me more calm. Because the meds helped with anxiety my BP went from 160/75 to a low 123/85. I was glad to be a patient there and I think it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety disorder, psychosis although I wasn’t hallucinating. And the second time I went I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety disorder, and a NOS personality disorder.

I have used Centerstone for several years. I have learned coping skills and paths for healing, everyone is very professional. I know that my road to better mental health may be long, I feel confident in Centerstone. My current counselor is Lindsey Doughty, she has been great, I am new to Lindsey,
but I feel very optimistic, she has been great.
