We flew my daughter from out of state for treatment as the state we live in doesn’t have the type of mental health care with coocurring substance abuse treatment (even though the facilities state they do). Canterbury so far has been the first facility to finally give my daughter the type of individualized care she needed. My daughter’s Case Worker Jen has been a Godsend. Jen became aware that my daughter was returning to New Hampshire for treatment and quickly took her under her guardian angel wings. Jen makes herself available to provide us as the parents reassurance with her knowledge at any time of the day, which is a blessing since we are not in the area to quickly come check on my daughter. I plan to come back and give an update on my review as treatment continues. So far, I highly recommend Canterbury for your family’s treatment! This was facilitated by all the staff and the program structure, but the guides stood out; in contrast to other programs the guides at summit are not only well-trained but they are devoted to the kids in a way that allows them to be both boundary setters and confidantes and mentors. Another standout element was the well thought out program--from the goals work in therapy to the structured planning for home visits. The regular feedback among the team members (the kids) was a huge asset in making this program work. At summit the kids are never made to feel that they are bad as they are in some programs; the balance between connection and support and holding boundaries is what really makes this program a standout among its peers. It was the hardest decision his dad and I ever made but it turned out to be the best one we did for our son. It was not easy. But the staff and the administration were very good at keeping us informed and helping us navigate our way through it and how to support our son, how to take care of ourselves and also how to parent in a different way. We tried so many things for three years before. But ultimately his world got so small, he wouldn’t go to school, or listen to us. It wasn’t easy, but he came back from Mountain Valley more confident, thoughtful, respectful, emotionally aware with skills to help himself and he is polite. He also has a whole community of friends and mentors that he really values. They were there with me through some of the arguably hardest days of my life, celebrated my successes and pushed me to take part in the difficult things they knew I could do, while also remaining consistent support systems even when I didn’t listen. The milieu was truly like my family away from home— the support given and received between Mountain Valley residents is an indescribably beautiful thing— and at MV I found a sense of community unlike anything I’d ever experienced before. I arrived at RBH in February 2016 and begrudgingly agreed to stay for 28 days, I ended up living there for almost 4 years because I just didn’t want to leave. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity at a new life, and how to truly enjoy that life, that was provided to me by the Riverbank. Cali Werner 4 months ago My son spent a year and three months at Spruce Mountain Inn, and I have nothing to say but positive things about it. The entire experience was, for us, a miracle. We had tried everything to treat his bipolar disorder, and I was desperate. In my search for a program that would help my son, Spruce stood out because it was a smaller program for people aged 18-28 that had been started in the 1980s and directed to the present day by the same incredible woman, and it seemed a good fit for my son. Surprisingly, it was also one of the least expensive as well. As a physician, I looked into SMI’s credentials and its personnel qualifications closely and was satisfied even before my son went there, and I was not disappointed. My son went from a severely depressed and sometimes suicidal individual who had no social interaction, was unable to keep a job, and basically felt hopeless about his life, to a confident, compassionate, outgoing, hardworking, and happy person. With the right medication (finally!) and the in-depth and insightful therapy he underwent, plus the love and care the staff at Spruce gave him, my son is now the person he was always meant to be without the bipolar disorder in charge of his brain. He is now able to live independently with a job and his own apartment, and manages his whole life with only the care and support any parents would give a child of 22. Spruce Mountain Inn literally changed his whole life, and because of that, ours as well. As a physician, I could not be more impressed with the amazing turnaround his time at Spruce made possible for him. As a parent, I could not be more grateful to them for giving him the chance to have a life. Without Spruce Mountain Inn, my son would still be a severely depressed individual completely dependent on his parents with no prospects and no hope of having a normal life. With Spruce Mountain Inn, my son now has a bright and happy future ahead of him. We will always be incredibly thankful to them for their help; it was literally a life-saver. Update 5 years later: My son is now 27 and an area manager for a large inventory company in Michigan. He has been doing fantastically well, able to weather the ups and downs of life thanks to the skills he learned at Spruce. At this point his bipolar disorder, while on medication and in counseling as needed, has only a small effect on his daily life. He is a happy, healthy and social person with a full life and an upwardly mobile job. Thank you again, Spruce Mountain! He went on his own volition, after years of trying everything else, at the recommendation of a local psychiatrist. And he dove into the program there. Everything about Spruce is intentional and thoughtful - the setting, the counselors, the program, interactions with the outside world and other residents. Our son's therapist was a perfect match for him, and us. He met people there who changed his life and with whom he is still in touch, and he began the process of becoming the adult he was meant to be. We scoffed at the idea that he would be there longer than a month or two, but his stay of seven months was perfect, and he left armed with life tools that are serving him well. I was genuinely accepted and treated with dignity by both residents and staff. 28 days flew by and I was reminded of how \|enjoyable life can still be even if you are sober. They let us smoke cigarettes on the patio outside and the food was outstanding and many times restaurant quality. I'll always have fond memories of this place. I can only hope that those that I met there are winning their battle with addiction or at the very least not giving up. They were all good souls that deserve happiness just as much as anyone else.
