When you’re dealing with things that aren’t visible on the outside, it can feel awkward explaining why certain parts of life just don’t function the way they used to. That’s not an easy thing to put into words. What stood out to me was that I didn’t feel rushed. The staff took the time to listen and ask thoughtful questions instead of assuming they already understood the situation. That matters more than people realize. When you’re navigating something complex — especially involving cognitive or executive functioning challenges — being heard is half the battle. The environment itself was calm and professional. Not flashy, not overwhelming — just steady. And sometimes steady is exactly what you need. Vocational rehabilitation is not a magic wand. It’s a process. But this visit felt like a step in the right direction rather than another bureaucratic hoop to jump through. I left feeling a mix of realism and cautious hope — which, honestly, is better than walking out feeling dismissed. If you’re considering going, especially for support with challenges that aren’t obvious on the surface, it’s worth the conversation. The three months that he spent at Momentum provided just the right mixture of support, insight and challenge to help him channel his energies in a positive direction. His therapist, Joe, was compassionate and effective, and helped motivate our son to reach for more than he thought possible. He left Momentum with a very positive attitude about himself and his possibilities. He has just started a ‘transition’ program where he is utilizing the lessons learned at Momentum to carve out his new life. Momentum is a very fine program with a dedicated, caring and skilled staff - we can highly recommend it! RE: A "edit" to my post- Today we learned that Dr Carter is retiring at the end of this month....a day I knew would eventually come, but had hoped would be a few more years away.... to see him 20 years +, it was emotional and very sad news😢. My son is not pleased at all, but we will have to wait and see if they "connect" in February. At that time, I didn’t realize how much of a codependency I had with my son. Even after dropping him off, I tried to stay involved in the day-to-day details which was the very reason I dropped him off in the first place. So i wouldn’t have to stay in the details and could focus on me. My advice is to let the process work. My son is now in a much better place and said this was the best decision he had ever made. I am also in a much better place and the Tuesday night parent calls are a must do for any one that has family in the program. NSR provides more freedom and flexibility in their program that a lot of other places did not. That was a deciding factor when I was initially looking for a place for my son to go. Then I found next step, and my second chance at a better, clean and sober life. I've been in and out of rehabs and detoxes my whole life. But this facility was different. I was welcomed like I was family and I had come home. With the love and compassion, not judged, but given a real chance at a better life. I'm currently living in the sober living house, and unlike a lot of places. The houses are very nice, clean, and up to date homes fully furnished. The staff is excellent, and always available to help with anything I need. Today I feel like a better man, a better husband, a better father, and I owe it all to next step recovery.
