Colleen Rynders 1 week ago I am a previous alumni of the Avenues in Concord New Hampshire where I experienced long-term sobriety, multiple years after attendance. I am also a veteran of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Bosnia; as well as I was a drug and alcohol counselor for veterans because Avenues gave me the tools needed for living a life of recovery, and instilled the importance of giving back. After my last treatment, I took suggestions and was also a house manager in sober living and worked a 12 step program, sponsoring other men through the process. This past year, I experienced a relapse because I stopped working a program and took back my will. After several attempts of recovering on my own, I surrendered and called my best friend and patrol leader from my deployment, and I asked for help. He reached out to Avenues, and I was given a call late into the night by an admission coordinator. When I spoke to this man I was broken and afraid. He showed me empathy, asked the right questions, and told me he would do whatever he could to get me into treatment. I was picked up by a team member from Avenues, Lake Ariel within 24 hours. The man who picked me up stopped so I could pick up needed items, and he checked on me throughout the whole ride. Once at the facility, I was opened with open arms and felt humiliated, while they saw it as practicing humility and doing the next right thing. They were full of empathy and compassion, and I was immediately started on a detox protocol where the nurses and practitioner were knowledgeable with medication and met me where I was thinking; nothing was pushed or forced. The majority of staff has a working knowledge of a twelve step program and are in recovery. No one was there just for a paycheck. My counselor and every staff member was attentive to my needs and were also able to help every client smile and feel human during such a difficult time. This facility also had veterans on staff who were willing to share directly with me in my process. They helped to save my life by sharing their experience, strength, and hope. They do give out Big Books and help orient clients with the program through nightly commitments and their own personal experience, strength, and hope. I am grateful for my experience and the Avenues Program. I have been to multiple facilities, and in my opinion Avenues is second to none. I trust their program more than that of any Veterans Administration I have ever attended. I am excited to be transferring to the Avenues in Maryland to finish my process. If you want to get sober and start to actually be honest with yourself the tech’s and the counselor that I specifically worked with will afford you that opportunity. Coming from a time where self loathing and disappointment ruled most of an alcoholics mind, the staff has personal experience and schooling that gives you the kick in the ass that you need to open up your eyes to the present your living in. I’m still a work in progress but without this place to start I truly don’t even know if I would have made it. My head has been in a cloud for years and years and everything that occurred here was for the better. I even heard from transfers that came in for a few days how awful some of the other rehabs are out there. I’m excited to get my life started again but I know in my heart of hearts I never would have gotten this far without this treatment center. The outings they take you on, the therapy sessions, the different meetings you attend, everything they discuss here really does help someone build strength in their own mind. I mean, you have to apply yourself if you want to take anything out of it, but if you truly do, it will truly make a difference. The staff, from the behavioral health techs to the therapists made it very obvious that they have your best interests in mind. I don't mesh well with 12 step-based programs, and while 12 step based treatment is available here, there is something for everyone. I felt very involved in my treatment plan from the first day, and I feel I had everything I needed to achieve my goals. I was at a very low point in my life, not wanting to be alive anymore. Embark was a very nice place. 99% of the staff were very kind and caring. The facility was very nice, and the food was pretty good. I didn't like being there, but looking back it wasn't too bad. I was transferred to a long term facility after 2 months at Embark. That is where I entered the world of The Troubled Teen Industry in Utah. I was not placed at one of the embark facilities there, rather an ROP program. But, it's important to know every single facility in Utah is BAD. Embark at the Poconos or one of their other locations far away from Utah is the exception. Embark at the Poconos was like a vacation compared to the other places I was sent. While I don't think you should send your child ANYWHERE unless absolutely necessary, it should be here if needed. I have heard bad things from friends who went to the embark locations in Utah. But, this one was pretty good. That being said, I thank embark at the Poconos for always treating me with compassion. Almost 3 years later, I am accepted to college for nursing and on track to graduate. This one has a hard time keeping councilors and things are always chaotic and unorganized. Different rules for different days and also for different people. If your known and friendly with certain people you get treated differently than those who are new or not as outgoing and personable. What I saw was a facility truly trying to help those who come in. Staff that would bend-over-backward to try to make people feel comfortable. They have a small staff, and a limited budget, and they go above and beyond places I've been that don't need to say the same. The rooms are clean everyday. The showers are great; let alone "not being able to clean your toothbrush". The place can be chaotic, but what would you call the people coming here in the first place? This isn't a spa; it's a place for sick people to get well, and they do their best to do that. I can't help but think a lot of these reviews are simply angry reviews by regularly angry people. It comes with the territory - we're people struggling. But I appreciate this place and the time I spent here; the staff and the effort they put in. The only credence I'll give is the minimal amount of contact to family had while here, but that doesn't equate to an unsafe environment and the allowance for people to make up whatever stories they want to about the place. Anyway - to the staff of Hillside; thank you. You did a lot for me in my short time there. You actually pushed me to really think about getting into this line of work - helping people who are struggling as I still am, though improving everyday. I was very defiant in the beginning of the treatment process because of my experiences in the past and was never comfortable enough to open up to anybody ever. I graduated within that 5 years but I just did the program to get everyone off my back I didn’t take in any of the suggestions given or was not willing to take a deeper look into my life so I got my certificate and left. Only to come back 2 years later still broken but this time no substance brought me back. Within coming back I’ve had a few lapses but I was SO COMFORTABLE to come back into this place and admit to that and I’ve built such solid worthy relationships here. This place gave me my life back. Gave my children their mother back and my family has their daughter back. If it was not for this place I would be dead. I love tpals because they meet you where you are at and work with you to understand the true ins and outs of this disease. I never thought I would be free from the chains of hell with drugs and alcohol and this place helped me free myself. I graduated again but I still come here everyday this place is my home and my safe place. Even if there isn’t any staff I sit in the parking lot if I need to regroup mentally. From the beginning everything went smoothly. Wendy was my point of contact from the start. She was incredibly helpful and made sure everything was situated and ready for me when I arrived for my first day of dosing. The nurses Tiffany and Chris are always helpful and accommodating.
