The ladies at the desk were super nice and patient when the need for rescheduling or anything else arose. The counselor I see is awesome and not judgemental which is very important when in this industry and has been hard to find in the medical field in Utah not being an LDS member. Give them a chance. I want to start by saying my daughter really struggled academically and behaviorally and my biggest fear was sending her to a place that would cause more harm then good. I researched and researched to make sure I found a place that I knew my daughter would be safe in. One thing about New Haven is the family support from other parents. New Haven was recommended to me from another parent who’s child was currently in the program and I am so happy I chose this placement. The first month was the hardest for both of us, her behaviors increased and so did my anxiety, however her therapist and the staff kept me well informed and walked me through all interventions! By month two we saw so much growth and stability from my daughter. The family therapies really helped us learn what she was feeling and how we can get closer as a family. Nursing was exceptional, they are very quick to respond to my questions and I had LOTS of questions regarding medication. They really listen to what my daughter was saying and did everything they can to help her with her symptoms of her diagnosis. The school portion was also amazing, my daughter struggled with school avoid and they worked with her and got her on a path where not only is she going to school and is doing the work and passing! She is very excited to go back to her school and show all her teachers what she has accomplished. The other thing that made me feel very comfortable with this transition to programming was the was the way milieu was ran. When you have 16 girls with 16 different reasonings of why they are admitted can easily create cauois but the staff really created an environment where the girls can grow safely and effectively. But also not to forget the girls really were their for eachother like a sisterhood. The only reason why I chose not to give 5 stars to New Haven was because it is not finaclially maintainable if insurance runs out and have no other source of funding it is very expensive. Although her therapist really advocated for her our Insurance dropped us and we had to leave before the program was completed. If I had to recommend a RTC for your daughter I highly recommend New Haven. Almost all the staff were incredibly caring and dedicated. Generally we were always heard and our input was a major part of our daughter's treatment plan. I also think it’s worth noting that many of these negative reviews come from people who left treatment early. Those experiences are absolutely valid, however they do not reflect what it’s like to move through the entire program and experience the full process. things often feel hardest before getting better. To preface this, my journey at New Roads has been anything but easy (for me or staff). When working through years of pain, fear, and maladaptive behaviors, emotions can be really overwhelming, and it’s easy to direct those feelings toward the treatment process itself. There were many moments pushed me FAR past my comfort zone and forced me to confront parts of myself I had been trying to avoid. I realize now that those moments weren’t signs that treatment wasn’t working, they were evidence that it was. I just wasn’t able to see that until after I graduated from the residential program. Before coming to New Roads, I had been to several different treatment centers. I always left feeling like another patient rather than an individual. I never felt understood and I struggled that anyone genuinely cared. By the time I arrived at New Roads in May 2024, I was emotionally done, impacted by trauma, and had almost no hope that this place would be any different. I felt so broken, misunderstood, and convinced i was beyond help. I honestly came to treatment because it was the box I was supposed to check, not because I believed it could actually help. I definitely wasn’t expecting healing. However, I found something I had never fully experienced before: people who truly cared. The staff (mostly) saw me as a person first, not a diagnosis or a presentation of symptoms. They held me accountable when needed and yet still showed compassion. There were days I wanted to leave and did. There were days i questioned the process and did, and times I caught myself directing my frustration with recovery toward the people who were trying to help me. I can see that those reactions were part of healing, not proof that treatment was failing. The support I received when it felt nearly impossible, gave me courage to keep going. Today, I can honestly say that choosing New Roads was one of the most rewarding decisions. It gave me way more than skills or a break from my struggles. It gave me hope, confidence, and the belief that I could build a life worth living. No treatment center is perfect, and everyone’s experience will be different. I don’t want to diminish anyone else’s story, because every person’s experience is real and deserves to be heard. At the same time, I think it’s equally important for people considering treatment to know that positive experiences exist too. It feels like a jail where they baby you with unlimited cigs and good food. Its not fun to wake up to a large man in the shared bathroom shitting at 4am. Yet, the court yard and people you meet are mostly good. Get a watch before you go so you can be on time for the many groups and an MP3 radio so you have something to do. More so than I was ever able to obtain at any of my other programs. My therapist was absolutely amazing, and they all worked extremely hard to make sure I had everything I needed. The Dr's and all the staff are very kind and knowledgeable. They genuinely want to help people who are struggling. It's a different kind of program in its very own special way and I greatly recommend it to anyone struggling. Sending Giavonna away for treatment was not an easy decision, but from the beginning, I felt that she was being treated with genuine care, compassion, and respect. The woman who handled Giavonna’s intake was wonderful. She was kind, understanding, and made me feel comfortable during what was a very emotional and difficult time. She even took the time to drive me back to the airport, which was such a thoughtful gesture that I will never forget. What meant the most to me was seeing the way the staff spoke to Giavonna. They treated her with patience and care and made her feel heard rather than judged. I also appreciated how they worked closely with my son and Giavonna’s mother, developing goals and game plans together so everyone could be on the same page and support her. No facility or program can make a difficult journey easy, but having people who truly care makes such a difference. Staff there were consummate professionals who care about the kids. The therapists helped me in ways that I’ll hold forever. James Darmody 4 weeks ago I owe New Haven my life. I was at the Teresa house from 2024 to 2026 and though my stay was long it was 100% worth every second. New Haven gave me what I needed to succeed, not what I wanted but what I needed. As always, there were definitely ups and downs to my stay but that is to be expected if anyone is growing and learning. And, I learned so many lessons that will keep me on the right path in life. One of the most important things that I learned during my stay was that I am good enough. That I don’t have to be good enough for others to be good enough for myself. I learned that honesty, even when it is hard, is one of the best ways to achieve a healthy relationship with anyone. This helped me grow my relationship with my parents because the value of honesty is one of the most important ones for our family. The program doesn’t just focus on the kid but the family as a whole. One big thing that they have the families explore is the idea of the problem is the problem. That no individual is the issue but, the actions and contributing factors are. My family and I have been taught how to separate the person from the action in order to move through a problem to get to the other side. There are many important pieces that build on healthy relationships and New Haven gave me the space to figure out how to have those healthy relationships. The staff who work there are truly there for the kids, to help them grow and move through the challenges that come their way. My therapist, Amy is one of the most brilliant people I have ever met. She would tell it to me straight if I messed up, give me advice when I needed it, help me work through my trauma, and have fun with me too. The program also assigns a residential staff to each student called a relational coach. My coach was Lauryn and she helped me work through the dynamics of healthy relationships. She stuck with me through my entire journey even when it was hard. I now have so many people in my corner including Amy and Lauryn who are rooting for me, that I can lean on when I need support. I have lots of tools to use when I make mistakes that can help me bounce back faster every time. I have so many healthy relationships with my family, my peers, the staff, and my therapist. I no longer have to worry about whether I have a future or not, because I now have all the things that I need to be successful in the goals that I work toward. I have learned that it is okay to struggle, that it is a normal thing that happens to everyone, but what counts is how you deal with it. I owe a big thank you to everyone who supported me, all of the employees, the amazing peers, Amy and Lauryn, and the amazing place and community that I have loved to be a part of. My daughter had some trauma when she was younger and when she started at New Haven, she was self-harming and thinking of suicide. The staff there kept her safe while supporting her needs, and her therapist, Amy, worked with both strength and grace. The program here not only focuses on the kids' behaviors, but also on repairing and making family interactions healthier. Amy pushed my daughter and me to both hold our own and respect the other's boundaries. While neither of us is perfect, my daughter and I are now at a point where we feel like we can talk with each other if issues come up, rather than arguing about it. I have learned so much about myself. I've been to several other methadone clinics and I've never made so much progress as here. The doctors here are amazing too and they really understand. If you are at all considering trying to get your life together and trying to get off heroin, make an appointment and follow through with it these people will change your life. What I noticed very first because my husband and I walked down here out of desperation at 5 in the morning when we came is that everyone was pulling up in nice cars on their way to work and they all looked really happy and it was a time when me and my husband were really really bad addicted to heroin and meth and I realize these are the kind of people I want to surround myself with I totally turned my life around and just a matter of a few months! You can't have everything you want when you're coming off drugs and alcohol! It's a facility that has guidelines and rules! Ryan 2 months ago Jordana juiliton Hilition mayor provost I love you need khelp Eliana Sandvik 1 year ago I’ve spent the better part of the last 11 years of my life at Provo Canyon School as a full time teacher and when Covid situations caused a need for additional student life mentors, and since my heart broke for the many teens who were in treatment during the pandemic, I became a substitute evening, and sometimes weekends overnight staff member to help during this time of needed compassion and supervision for the situation of these teens. I am also the parent of a child named Mikey (naming him here because I have four other children and don’t want any of them to feel that their identity and reputation could be compromised by anything I say here about their brother and his experience in five separate behavioral and treatment facilities that he and I together chose to place him in to help him learn to deal with his addiction and his life traumas). In-patient treatment is at best always tough because vulnerable children are away from their parents, family and familiar friends as they voyage into living in a dorm setting with other children with some similar issues, and some with much more complex issues. Provo Canyon School provides these children with fantastic psychiatrists who also work in private practice outside the facility. My son, (who was a student body President, a medical assistant, and, sadly an Opoid addict who sometimes used illegal drugs to self medicate his bi-polar mental disorder) was prescribed, and responded very well to medications similar to what the PCS doctors prescribe our patients. Like some of these respondents on the PCS comments page, he went through spells of feeling inadequately or overly medicated until the right dosage was attained by his doctors and his compliance in taking the meds correctly and having nurses, teachers, staff, and therapists work together to help him communicate and observe the meds that helped him feel “right” mentally. This process is not easy for the patient, family, nor staff or facility in general, and a lot of patience and energy is required to just get the meds right for the desired behaviors to happen. I question negative comments by some of our past students here because time and time again I have witnessed some dramatic and wonderful mental and behavioral improvements in my PCS students within a couple weeks of getting on properly prescribed meds if needed and getting away from the substances that some may have been detoxing from. In 11 years, I have never seen any patient not have more than enough clean water from clean drinking fountains and more good food and tasty snacks, all planned and reviewed by competent dietary professionals and good cooks. Teachers and staff often dine with patients in the cafeteria and requests for special diet accommodations are often honored. As far as academics are concerned, I have worked at five accredited public schools in two states and have never worked with more distinguished and professional school academic directors than we have now at PCS and both have been at the school for over ten years. Many of the teachers have masters degrees and most have double majored with special education credentials to help both gifted and special needs students. As far as I have been able to determine, comparing PCS with the five facilities that my own son attended, (wish I had known about PCS at the time) the school directors, leadership and all facility employees that I have observed are doing an amazing job of using Trauma Informed Care, best practices, professionalism and kindness in helping patients learn the skills and have the knowledge to become happy, successful and productive members of our society. annette alexander 1 year ago

I was a patient at the Utah State Hospital, and I was there for 1 year. I have been out for almost 6 months, and have took time to reflect before writing my review to really soak in my experience and this is what I think. While there are many negative thinks I could say about this place, this hospital truly made my life worth living. The Utah State Hospital isn’t meant to be an easy experience, you are meant to be put in a place to challenge yourself, which will cause outbursts, setbacks, relapses, drama, and more, and sadly this is all apart of recovery. But I am lucky to have had all of these setbacks in a safe, secure environment such as the Utah State Hospital, surrounded by staff who at the end of the day care about you and have one ultimate goal, to keep YOU safe. Even if that means resorting to restraints or time to refocus that may cause distress in the moment because top priority is safety, and while that can feel neglecting and like the world is ending, it isn’t. It is actually the best interest for everyone. Because while staff have to focus on safety of the patients they also have to think of safety for themselves. We often think we know what’s best for ourselves but when we are in a state where we can’t make stable decisions we don’t always know what’s best for us. So the hospital has a carefully curated team of staff to manage meds, treatment , food, etc so you can succeed. The Utah State Hospital can be a helpful, therapeutic treatment if you use it to your full potential and keep going when things get hard. There will be times you wish you never went here, and times you hate the staff, but it will all be worth it at the end. The relief and self control you can gain. You can have fun at the Utah State Hospital but within the rules, and breaking the rules comes with consequences so privileges can be taken away, and that is not to punish but to help you learn for the future. Don’t expect fantastic food here, but it is still good and nutritious. I strongly suggest if you are going here to let your experience be yours and don’t let others opinions influence your stay, because you can let your stay be worth while if you choose too. To sum things up, Go into the Utah State Hospital with a fresh mindset, be open to change and growth. Be prepared for challenges and embrace them. Don’t expect perfection. I was rarely ever bored, they have a TV with a Netflix and Disney Plus, and library for anyone, even those stuck on unit level. (And yes, they do have quite the manga selection, and movies you can rent, and podcasts/audio things you can put into your headphones. You can even learn Spanish in your headphones! Trust me: if you're bored, it's often your own fault.) They have so many activities, and as you level up, you can attend more activities. Dr. Roundy was the best doctor I've ever had. He got me on a medication that WORKS for the first time in my life, I have a medication that works. All the one star reviews: it could be possible they didn't follow the rules. Follow the unit and campus rules and while I cannot promise a swift discharge, your stay at the hospital will be a lot easier, and maybe even fun. (I had fun.)
