Tiffany Mullis 5 days ago I dropped my son off nine months ago at NSR. At that time, I didn’t realize how much of a codependency I had with my son. Even after dropping him off, I tried to stay involved in the day-to-day details which was the very reason I dropped him off in the first place. So i wouldn’t have to stay in the details and could focus on me. My advice is to let the process work. My son is now in a much better place and said this was the best decision he had ever made. I am also in a much better place and the Tuesday night parent calls are a must do for any one that has family in the program. NSR provides more freedom and flexibility in their program that a lot of other places did not. That was a deciding factor when I was initially looking for a place for my son to go. Then I found next step, and my second chance at a better, clean and sober life. I've been in and out of rehabs and detoxes my whole life. But this facility was different. I was welcomed like I was family and I had come home. With the love and compassion, not judged, but given a real chance at a better life. I'm currently living in the sober living house, and unlike a lot of places. The houses are very nice, clean, and up to date homes fully furnished. The staff is excellent, and always available to help with anything I need. Today I feel like a better man, a better husband, a better father, and I owe it all to next step recovery. Yes, they are understaffed and they are overworked, but they are also the only organization available in our area for people with mental health crises. There is a severe statewide and national problem of inadequate mental health services. Without Appalachian, our community would be in far worse shape, because there is nothing else like it available in this whole region. The three months that he spent at Momentum provided just the right mixture of support, insight and challenge to help him channel his energies in a positive direction. His therapist, Joe, was compassionate and effective, and helped motivate our son to reach for more than he thought possible. He left Momentum with a very positive attitude about himself and his possibilities. He has just started a ‘transition’ program where he is utilizing the lessons learned at Momentum to carve out his new life. Momentum is a very fine program with a dedicated, caring and skilled staff - we can highly recommend it! They did exactly what they said they were going to do. They taught him how to survive and thrive in the woods of North Carolina. They taught him how to express his feelings and needs in a way that is respectful to everyone around him. They helped him learn about himself and brought his self-talk over to the positive side of things. They taught him that "he can do hard things". My family is so grateful to this group of people who run this program. We dropped off an angry, selfish, going-nowhere good kiddo and after a lot of work, missteps, repetition, and encouragement, my son had a fabulous growth experience at TRAILS that will serve him the rest of his life.
