I didn't wait near as long as civilian medical facilities, and all the Staff I encountered were friendly, engaging, and professional. The two different appointments I had were both very helpful, and I knew my health was in good hands. I'm actually amazed at how many services they provide in such a compact space. They did exactly what they said they were going to do. They taught him how to survive and thrive in the woods of North Carolina. Methadone clinics get a bad reputation due to outdated stigmas surrounding opiate addiction and Medication Assisted Treatment, as well as the fact that many opiate addicts have co-occurring mental health and trauma disorders they are coping with that make treatment complicated. It's not an easy community to treat. It takes special people with a high capacity for compassion and patience. I just want to thank everyone at this center for being those special people that make a difference every day. Thank you Shelley for always being so supportive and caring with me. It was my second try at rehab (first time at The Estate in MS (4/25-5/25). Key take aways from my experience: 1. The success rate for staying clean after rehab is slim. 2. The difference between my first time to rehab and second time at Red Oak in the grand scheme of things was that I knew what to expect in a general since, had specific things I wished I would have known the first go around mindset wise, spiritual wise, and participation wise. 3. I don’t think there’s a rehab that’s perfect, and if you have a negative mindset and attitude you will always find things that lack and things you wished rehab had. 4. The outcome was far better than the first time because I had been plagued with not knowing how to feel or communicate when I first got clean, but at red oak I had so many successes and break throughs, main ones during the last 2 weeks which is incredible seeing I busted my ass during the entirety of my stay and only worked with positivity and optimism. 5. Again, your time at any rehab regardless of the program success wise is not based on any specific amount of time so make the time count, don’t have too high of expectations, participate as much as possible, And don’t take yourself too seriously. I have never heard of anyone that has stayed clean long term that didn’t actively participate during groups. I don’t think there’s is a rehab that’s perfect in regards to keeping you busy throughout the entire day. Most of my breakthrough moments happened during the down time when I was bored out of my mind and felt depressed. It was the perception change that took place from a negative view or mindset to a positive one and has carried over into now. The mountain campus with bump beds and and Residential campus all in one residential house were a lot different. I originally went to Red Oak expecting to only stay a month until I was made aware of the the second step after residential was the PHP Program in the mountains. I was kind of confused seeing it was supposed to mean a “half step down”care wise, but the only difference was that you punched out your medication with your own hands (while being monitored). It was also confusing to me that the rest of the patients at the mountain campus (except for the guys that also came from the residential campus) were admitted to the PHP program without any clean time and had were with the same caliber severity wise. It wasn’t a big deal in regards of the difference between a patient that is a month clean vs. a day clean, but it did make me question why I had to spend 1 month in a less developed program of the 2 and that the other clients didn’t have to and could do however much time in the mountains, but I was lucky enough to be given a scholarship to the PHP mountain campus due to my efforts made in residential so I’m happy with the outcome of the situation, so I could see that being an issue in someone else’s story. I had a great experience at the residential campus and really enjoyed both of my therapists because they both challenged me and didn’t settle for my shit (Jennifer in residential and Colleen during PHP). The PHP mountain campus also has a daily hour and a half process therapy group that is led by 3 licensed clinicians. It really made me feel more optimistic to divulge anything regarding to how I felt or headspace I was in because there were multiple feedback loops. The main part I think about with what I got the most out of the situation wasn’t really so much advice on how to feel or judgement, it was that I had 3 times as many licensed clinicians to interact with that all made me equally feel like my story was valid and 3 times as many times to be validated on whatever it was I was sharing. Communication side kinda sucked being letters only but it also probably was a good thing. I had little to no light left in my eyes nor did I have any hope at getting better. I had spent 2 days on the phone with my insurance company and various facilites trying to find somewhere to go. I discovered Smokey Mountain Lodge through some referrals and picked up the phone. Within 3 hours I had been assessed, approved, and had a bed secured. The next day I spent 4 hours in the car to get there. I was hesitant, my time at the Lodge was my 4th residential treatment facility and I doubted if I would get anything out of it. After all, I had been playing the psych ward game for a long time. The following will describe my experience at the Lodge: It was nothing short of life changing and life saving. The facility itself is beautiful. The surrounding scenery was so tranquil. A beautiful view of a mountain, a lovely garden to walk through, you are surrounded by nature. They offer a gym you have 24/7 access to. They do have weights, but using them must be supervised by a tech. The food was fantastic, they have an excellent culinary team. The team of techs were incredible, you can tell they actually care about their clients and offer a huge amount of support (Special shoutout to Ty and Heidi). Group therapy was insanely helpful. They offered a large variety of psychoeducational and recreational groups. They taught DBT, CBT, ACT, diagnostic education, and much more. They have a fully stocked art room and two amazing recreational therapists to accompany it. Matt and Haley were awesome, they always had fun and engaging groups. Special shoutout to Jadie, while she was an intern she was incredible at psychoeducation, her groups were fantastic. The nursing department was exceptional as well. I loved my provider, she really listened to me and helped me find a medication regiment that was effective. My experience with one on one therapy was also fantastic. Lexi is great. She helped me process a lot of my trauma, start the healing process, and find value in myself. I made unforgettable connections with my peers as well. I will never forget the friends I made at SML. If you are hesitant about going to treatment, I understand. We all are. But, in my opinion, the Lodge is 100% worth your time and effort. Put the work in and you can get better just like I did. She stayed in residential for a month and then PHP for another month. Our experience was excellent. She was safe and fully supported. The staff and professionals were caring and supportive. They even have a family support group to support those at home. I would definitely choose it again if the need was there. I have the best councillor anybody could ever have. Sherry Barnes knows me inside and out! The reason I don't go to a clinic closer to me is because of Sherry. Needed to guest dose for 3 days and they ended up going above and beyond to do what they could to help us. Extremely thankful for this place. From personal experience, I attended this program back in October 2016 at the age of 20. At that time, I had no direction or discipline in my life. Waypoint Ministry introduced me to both—and so much more. During the first 30 days of the program, participants go through a “blackout period.” During this time, we weren’t allowed to exercise, as it allowed our bodies to recover from years of drug use and unhealthy lifestyle choices. After 30 days, we were allowed to begin exercising, which was a turning point for me. It has now been eight years since I graduated from the program. I still stay in contact with the men I attended with, and I cherish the fellowship I experienced there. One of the most impactful parts of the program for me was working in the thrift store. It was a fantastic learning opportunity that taught me soft skills I still use today. Because of that experience, I now enjoy visiting thrift stores and looking for treasures, knowing how much thought and effort goes into sorting donations, stocking the storefront and clothing racks, and even selling items online. Sadly, I’ve lost a couple of friends over the years because they chose to return to their old lifestyles. However, I’ve also witnessed countless examples of broken men entering the program and leaving as spiritual giants. Waypoint Ministry opened doors for me to participate in missions trips, youth camps, and even spreading the gospel in prisons. As of 2025, I’m still sober and stay connected with a few people from Waypoint. If you had told me years ago that my life would turn out this way, I wouldn’t have believed you. I’ve hit rock bottom a few times and she has helped me learn and grow from those falls. I’m a stronger person because of her listening and teaching skills. You have to want to get better and put in the work. The therapists are not magic. They can’t heal you. If you don’t put in the work- you can’t get better. So make sure you are determined to conquer your disease. You can do it. If I can crawl out of the deep pits- you can too. You have to hold on to their words and use the skills they teach you. Be willing to grow. She listens and cares deeply about her guests. I am part of a group therapy also and it’s incredible. Our instructor Angie is amazing.
