This place saved my life. From my over the phone intake to the moment I discharged every staff member made me feel supported and they were excited for me to take the step Forward. Let’s start with the most important piece (at least for me). THEY ALLOW YOU TO BRING YOUR PETS. There were 3 puppies there basically the whole time I was there. It was so amazing. I also heard they had a bunny there at one point. So they love Furr babies and know how important they are for us. Paula picked me up from the detox. She’s the alumni coordinator. But really she’s a fairy God Mother. She does so much for everyone there. She answered my millions of questions everyday. She was always doing something and had the answer to basically everything. Kambree, the head nurse is the bomb. She’s so funny and caring. Very helpful in every way possible. Dr. Reed was great at adjusting my medications and going over the information about them all. He’s also quite funny! Brittney is the Boss and you would never know it because she’s so humble. She would get us ice cream like every other Friday! And was easy to talk too. All the groups were amazing. I learned so much about my recovery. All the therapist were GREAT! I had Tessa and she met with me every week,some times twice a week, and was very helpful. We talked a lot about boundaries and life balance. I loved her! Mario and Joe were awesome too and so fun and funny. You should check this place out just to hear Joe read a story. The Techs were so supportive and loving. Troy, the head tech, kept it 100% real and didn’t bull shit or sugar coat shit. As addicts we need that. Tray, also a tech, the maintenance man, driver for pick ups and discharges, plus an awesome man to talk too. He did so much for us while I was there. Tanner is also one of the best techs I have ever come across. And I’ve been to quite a few rehabs. He’s so caring, so understanding, amazing to talk too, very funny, Hung out with the clients but never made anyone feel like he was above them, which gained him a lot of respect. If anyone ever needed anything he always got it taken care of in a timely manner and didn’t make you feel like a burden, or forget about what you asked. Amber and Shannon made the weekends fun for all of us. We had a water balloon fight, went hiking, played volleyball. They were also very easy to talk to and trustworthy. Caitlyn and Shandra were there my first day and really made me feel welcomed. Other staff that I want to give a shout out just for being awesome: Melissa (financial lady), Maren (discharge lady), Mandy another therapist but also another title I forget. Over all living: you get a list for groceries you get to check off what you need, live in really nice apartments 3br 2 full baths. 2 people to a room. You get your phone for an hour a day 1pm-2pm while on lunch break. That hour really saved me. Allowed me just enough contact to the outside world and allowed me to check in on my family daily. (Except weekends). Over all this place was THE SHITT!! One of the best rehabs I’ve ever been to. All the staff were amazing.clients were awesome too. I will always be so thankful for this place. My recovery journey started with October Road when I entered their PHP program, which at the time was called the River House. One thing I’ve learned in recovery is that many treatment programs struggle with staffing, and people in early recovery often don’t have positive examples to look up to. That was not my experience here—far from it. I was surrounded by staff who genuinely cared and demonstrated what recovery, professionalism, and service look like every day. The BHTs, clinicians, counselors, and support staff created an environment that was both structured and supportive. Justin, Alex, Chuck, and Gray made a lasting impact on me. They treated us with dignity, held us accountable, and encouraged us to believe that a better life was possible. The community was just as important. The groups were meaningful, the other clients became a source of support, and the overall culture helped me build a strong foundation for recovery. During my time there, I served as the cook for my house and even became the barber for many of the clients. We built healthy relationships, supported one another, and enjoyed simple things like going to the river after clinical days. I continued my journey with October Road through IOP and early recovery services. Even today, I still use October Road for my medical needs. It was my second try at rehab (first time at The Estate in MS (4/25-5/25). Key take aways from my experience: 1. The success rate for staying clean after rehab is slim. 2. The difference between my first time to rehab and second time at Red Oak in the grand scheme of things was that I knew what to expect in a general since, had specific things I wished I would have known the first go around mindset wise, spiritual wise, and participation wise. 3. I don’t think there’s a rehab that’s perfect, and if you have a negative mindset and attitude you will always find things that lack and things you wished rehab had. 4. The outcome was far better than the first time because I had been plagued with not knowing how to feel or communicate when I first got clean, but at red oak I had so many successes and break throughs, main ones during the last 2 weeks which is incredible seeing I busted my ass during the entirety of my stay and only worked with positivity and optimism. 5. Again, your time at any rehab regardless of the program success wise is not based on any specific amount of time so make the time count, don’t have too high of expectations, participate as much as possible, And don’t take yourself too seriously. I have never heard of anyone that has stayed clean long term that didn’t actively participate during groups. I don’t think there’s is a rehab that’s perfect in regards to keeping you busy throughout the entire day. Most of my breakthrough moments happened during the down time when I was bored out of my mind and felt depressed. It was the perception change that took place from a negative view or mindset to a positive one and has carried over into now. The mountain campus with bump beds and and Residential campus all in one residential house were a lot different. I originally went to Red Oak expecting to only stay a month until I was made aware of the the second step after residential was the PHP Program in the mountains. I was kind of confused seeing it was supposed to mean a “half step down”care wise, but the only difference was that you punched out your medication with your own hands (while being monitored). It was also confusing to me that the rest of the patients at the mountain campus (except for the guys that also came from the residential campus) were admitted to the PHP program without any clean time and had were with the same caliber severity wise. It wasn’t a big deal in regards of the difference between a patient that is a month clean vs. a day clean, but it did make me question why I had to spend 1 month in a less developed program of the 2 and that the other clients didn’t have to and could do however much time in the mountains, but I was lucky enough to be given a scholarship to the PHP mountain campus due to my efforts made in residential so I’m happy with the outcome of the situation, so I could see that being an issue in someone else’s story. I had a great experience at the residential campus and really enjoyed both of my therapists because they both challenged me and didn’t settle for my shit (Jennifer in residential and Colleen during PHP). The PHP mountain campus also has a daily hour and a half process therapy group that is led by 3 licensed clinicians. It really made me feel more optimistic to divulge anything regarding to how I felt or headspace I was in because there were multiple feedback loops. The main part I think about with what I got the most out of the situation wasn’t really so much advice on how to feel or judgement, it was that I had 3 times as many licensed clinicians to interact with that all made me equally feel like my story was valid and 3 times as many times to be validated on whatever it was I was sharing. Communication side kinda sucked being letters only but it also probably was a good thing. It was my rock bottom. Part of my sentence was to get an assessment and complete some sessions with a counselor. Although I was nervous and in over my head the assessor was so kind and really listened to me and directed me through everything I needed to know. It has been a while since I received treatment, but I think about it often and how transformative the experience was. After attempting to receive care at a traditional rehab, it was clear I needed a bit more help than what they could offer. I was serious about my recovery and willing to do anything to obtain sobriety, even if it meant taking the uncomfortable leap and acknowledging how significant a role my mental health played in my addiction. While not every day was a walk in the park, I recognize that The Willows played an integral role in my recovery, pushing when they needed and making space when I did. Yes, being surrounded by a multitude of other women with equal, if not more, significant challenges can be complex. But staying focused on my own life and recovery, while empathizing with others', helped me avoid tangles and clashes. The location is perfect, beautiful, and serene. The house is just as lovely. The meals were excellent, and the support services provided by the staff rival any treatment I have received to date. Staying the 90 days, then heeding their advice and going to sober living, was the best decision I have ever made in life. I take classes on curing skitzophenia and learn information such as staying away from orange juice which is full of sugar. Once in a while for special occasion a healthy soda is a special treat. Unfortunately, my English family is not able to support my health education. This information is part of my self care. I am glad I have the educational steps so I do not need to visit again. My family chooses not to support my betterment. My English aristocracy family chooses not to listen, they care about their wealth, and like to move me. They help professional identify and educate me on my divergent thinking which is caused by both my English and Irish ancestries. To address divergent thinking, they provide hard suggestions to continually study, work through, practice, and reflect on regarding more consideration of how to relate and figuring out what strategies are effective in building healthy relationship. I am good at working through a professional organization chart to help identify and assess past healthy social interaction. At the end, I am able to assess my slight adjustments to make the good situations more safe and healthy. After a doctor visit in high school, I am scarily concerned I have a related cancer. They thankfully and very smartly professionally address in my late 20s I personally progress to dealing with slight skitzophenia and provide education steps to move forward focusing on really strict healthy eating. They thankfully address my eating issue after I temporarily have not been able to eat what I need to. I love their food medicine. Unfortunately, my home community still chooses to be reluctant in providing my prescribed medicine. My community does not support my personal recommendation from Dr. Josh Axe. I am thankful this extra knowledge shares with my community underlying issue I address. I wish everyone visited the psychiatrist. I was stabilized for a couple of years after that. My only regret was not being able to stay in the program longer. I really credit the staff for their major role in stabilizing me, helping me adjust, and keeping me safe during those three months. The staff saw me at my worst and at my best. Somehow, they were able to help me reach a stable ground of somewhere in-between, of just being “fine”. I really credit the special relationships I forged with the staff during that time period. The staff kept me safe in times of manic periods, and kept me safe overall. The staff got me thinking about Recovery and got me thinking about being well at home. I was able to receive extra counseling while I was there on Sundays, and sometimes during the week, which was so desperately needed. I really credit Residential Evening for keeping me steady during my downtime. The individual counseling sessions with my Team were also really helpful, as well as was Family Therapy. The groups during the day were beneficial, too, and really added longer-term therapy and coping mechanisms to my stay. I would recommend that you stay at CooperRiis for as long as possible and go through Levels A, B, and C if you can. This is the single, best, most important financial decision you will make for your mental health. CooperRiis takes a holistic approach, which was new and different for me. But I benefitted greatly from this approach. The delicious (and new to me) Mediterranean Diet did wonders for my body for three months and taught me a lot about nutrition for mental health. Upon my return home, I was able to receive extra monthly support from the CooperRiis family education program, on a variety of interesting topics. I also am able to keep in touch with the alumni contact person every so often. I’ll continue to keep in touch with CooperRiis. It was the best financial decision I ever made for myself. The staff are great, wonderful, patient people who are highly-qualified to do this job. The staff at CooperRiis at Asheville really helps you with the road of recovery and a long-term period of stabilization. I really miss all of the staff who were there during the Summer of 2023. I don't think it's any big secret to my friends or family by a long shot that two years ago I needed to subject myself to the accountability, structure and love provided by the Lighthouse. Two years ago my life was a mess of constant search for any substance I could get and use to escape the pressures of life that I had found myself simply running from. With no place to live, family connections mostly ruined and a daily struggle just to survive, eat, and to progress in life, I sought help from a detox facility in Black Mountain, NC. As my stay in a detox winded to an end, the question of where I would go afterwards began to bother me increasingly, as I truly had nowhere to go. I could possibly have returned to the hell-like place I had called my home before detoxing from horribly addictive and illegal substances, but that would have most likely been my demise literally, as I was risking death on a daily basis before going to detox. Many of my friends and peers were not living through what I was enduring. No one I know got into partying to die from it, things had gone too far at this place, and everything seemed to be going dangerously haywire. By chance a counselor at the detox I knew suggested a new recovery home that would soon be opening, just as I was departing detox and had decided to select a halfway house in which I would live in next, trying to increase my chances of literally surviving at that point in my life. The Lighthouse Foundation was suggested as a recovery house that had openings, as the director had recently acquired a new house in South Asheville that would be opening soon. I read online about "A Zen-like approach to recovery," and I spoke to the newly appointed house manager about the high level of selection taking place to fill this new recovery house. No doubt I was excited about, "A Zen-like," place to live, instead of returning to the hell I knew back "home." At my age, I was seriously wanting and needing to make fundamental changes in my life and from what I was hearing from the Lighthouse manager, that would all be possible at this extremely nice house, which was in a very nice, safe neighborhood. Simply put- that's where I wanted to be. Obviously money was something I lacked, and no one who knew me at the time was about to invest a dollar towards anything I had going on- I had worn out those resources through years of scheming and manipulating people to get what I thought I needed in an effort to self-medicate. So what would I do? How would I get into such a place- what was literally a newly purchased house, and a brand new program just needing recovering addicts to fill its dwelling. I became instantly grateful when it was made clear to me that Ryan, the program director, fully understood and seemed to have sympathy for my situation. He allowed me to come to the Lighthouse with absolutely nothing more than a promise that I would seek gainful employment and begin to pay weekly program fees that seemed very fair and doable, in consideration of the program and atmosphere that was being offered freely upfront in exchange. I'm so grateful for this place, and I am so glad that I wasn't forced, due to lack of funding or availability, to stay in one of the other recovery homes in Asheville that I hear such terrible things about. I have needed these two years to recover, and I don't think I could have done it in a place that doesn't promote brotherhood and cohesion, love and respect, accountability and responsibility. I could not recommend the Lighthouse Foundation- any of its three locations in Asheville- more highly. Michael Seawell 7 months ago I’ve been an addict for 10plus years in and outta jail and nothing ever seemed to help with my addiction… I came to lighthouse and was given stability and was made to be accountable for my actions … I became assistant house manager witch then gave me more responsibilities as far as setting an example for all the other guys in the house and holding them accountable for there actions and helping make sure things ran smoothly I was here for about 3 months and eventually moved into my own apartment… the program works and u will be successful as long as u put the work in and do what is asked of you!!
