Yes, they are understaffed and they are overworked, but they are also the only organization available in our area for people with mental health crises. There is a severe statewide and national problem of inadequate mental health services. Without Appalachian, our community would be in far worse shape, because there is nothing else like it available in this whole region. They did exactly what they said they were going to do. They taught him how to survive and thrive in the woods of North Carolina. Tiffany Mullis 5 days ago I dropped my son off nine months ago at NSR. At that time, I didn’t realize how much of a codependency I had with my son. Even after dropping him off, I tried to stay involved in the day-to-day details which was the very reason I dropped him off in the first place. So i wouldn’t have to stay in the details and could focus on me. My advice is to let the process work. My son is now in a much better place and said this was the best decision he had ever made. I am also in a much better place and the Tuesday night parent calls are a must do for any one that has family in the program. NSR provides more freedom and flexibility in their program that a lot of other places did not. That was a deciding factor when I was initially looking for a place for my son to go. Then I found next step, and my second chance at a better, clean and sober life. I've been in and out of rehabs and detoxes my whole life. But this facility was different. I was welcomed like I was family and I had come home. With the love and compassion, not judged, but given a real chance at a better life. I'm currently living in the sober living house, and unlike a lot of places. The houses are very nice, clean, and up to date homes fully furnished. The staff is excellent, and always available to help with anything I need. Today I feel like a better man, a better husband, a better father, and I owe it all to next step recovery. We have all had exceptional service from all of the care providers. In an atmosphere that can be pretty thankless at times due to each patients needs, wants and desires the staff handles it with professional skills. Cannot say enough about the ER. They are helpful and caring from the moment you walk through the doors until the moment you leave. Our primary care doctors are fantastic given the workload they carry. Even if you have not seen the care provider in a year when you walk in it is just like yesterday you spoke with them. Every place will have it's ups and downs. Good and bad experiences based on the individual needs of others. But, the amount of patients seen here it is amazing how smooth this place operates. For a Veteran it is like going home in a familiar comrade way! Thank you from the heart to each and every caregiver. Always remember if you feel you need just a little more attention contact patient advocacy and watch the wheel start spinning in the right direction. If you come here and do exactly what you’re supposed to do then the stay will be amazing. By doing what you’re supposed to do I mean going to group on time, taking your meds on time, be friendly to clients and staff, have patience with staff when you’re not getting something as soon as you want it. There’s always more clients than staff so patience is key. Rehab is not a vacation. Rehab is meant to be hard and test you just like real life would. Accept responsibility where you are wrong and take accountability for your actions. We put ourselves in rehab, rehab did not call us. I see these bad reviews on here and it seems like it’s just clients who didn’t get there way and decided to complain on here about it. The staff at Crestview works hard to make sure all clients needs are taken care of but there are a lot of clients who just can’t seemed to be pleased. Don’t lie to staff or they will catch you. My recovery journey started with October Road when I entered their PHP program, which at the time was called the River House. One thing I’ve learned in recovery is that many treatment programs struggle with staffing, and people in early recovery often don’t have positive examples to look up to. That was not my experience here—far from it. I was surrounded by staff who genuinely cared and demonstrated what recovery, professionalism, and service look like every day. The BHTs, clinicians, counselors, and support staff created an environment that was both structured and supportive. Justin, Alex, Chuck, and Gray made a lasting impact on me. They treated us with dignity, held us accountable, and encouraged us to believe that a better life was possible. The community was just as important. The groups were meaningful, the other clients became a source of support, and the overall culture helped me build a strong foundation for recovery. During my time there, I served as the cook for my house and even became the barber for many of the clients. We built healthy relationships, supported one another, and enjoyed simple things like going to the river after clinical days. I continued my journey with October Road through IOP and early recovery services. Even today, I still use October Road for my medical needs. I brought my son to Smoky Mountain Lodge from Texas, with very few options and little understanding of what to expect. Although our journey had its challenges and wasn't always a smooth ride, my son came out of the experience in a better place, with greater clarity and a healthier outlook. The staff at Smoky Mountain Lodge genuinely care about their patients, and that made a difference to our family. They also offer a wonderful family support group that provides guidance, encouragement, and a place to ask questions during what can be an incredibly overwhelming and emotional time. Having that support helped us navigate the unknown and better understand how to support our son. My biggest concern was communication. At times, responses were slower than I would have liked, which was difficult as a parent so far away from my child. However, I also recognize that the staff are caring for many patients and have a tremendous responsibility. Whenever I was able to connect with a staff member, they were courteous, compassionate, and genuinely tried to answer my questions and provide the information I needed. One important piece of advice for other parents: Make sure you have the appropriate Releases of Information (ROIs) completed and in place as early as possible. These are essential for allowing staff to communicate with you about your loved one and provide updates, within the scope of the authorizations. Overall, I am grateful for the care my son received and for the support our family was given during such a difficult chapter of our lives.
