Lawrence, KS | Lawrence Outpatient Services is one of several clinics run by DCCCA, a human service agency dedicated to improving community wellbeing across Kansas through tailored social and behavioral health services. They’re located on East 23rd Street in Lawrence, Kansas, a few blocks from US Route 40 and just two miles southeast of South Park in the East L | Treatments Programs Payment Options | This review is about Parallels’ business practices and not the counseling. The counseling I received was excellent and I followed my therapist to her new location when she left!
Parallels asks you to sign up for a patient portal, which would be nice except they don’t really use it. I received an email in June stating that in July Parallels would be moving to paperless billing to be eco friendly, which is great! They asked me to sign up for the patient portal, which I already had, and in the email stated that the “balance and patient statement” will be posted on there. There is also a part that asks you to fill out paperwork if you want e-statements.
Parallels has a very informal take to billing, so I sometimes would go to the front desk after my session to pay my outstanding balance. There is no check-in before the session (at least I didn’t) so no one really discusses your account or tells you when you have an outstanding balance. So no one asked me if I wanted to fill out the e-statement paperwork either. I didn’t ask for it because I thought the information would be on the portal, and I am pretty good at checking those things and staying on top of it.
After I left Parallels to follow my therapist to her new practice in September, I checked the portal frequently to see if I had an outstanding balance. There was nothing on there every time I checked. I double checked my email to be sure it read that information would be put on the portal, and that is what it stated, so I periodically checked and left it at that. Again, Parallels has a very informal billing process so I assumed whatever wasn’t on the portal I had already paid for. They don’t show you billing paperwork when you pay, they just tell you how much you owe, so I never knew what days I was paying for.
Yesterday, I received a letter and a phone call from a collections agency. Parallels sent my balance to that collections agency, which I understand is their procedure if one does not pay their balance and I signed paperwork stating I understood that. However, Parallels could have done a better job with communication about billing especially as they stated billing would be posted on the patient portal, and it was not. Additionally, had someone communicated about completing paperwork for e-statements I may have done that. Again, I didn’t think it would be a problem if billing were to be posted on the patient portal.
I tried calling Parallels to get an understanding of their billing procedures, but they blocked my number. I had no problem paying my balance. I want to pay for the services I’ve received, however I wanted to discuss why there was miscommunication as I don’t feel this is all my fault. My husband had to call them on a different number and they transferred him around before secretly transferring him to the collection agency. This was frustrating as we just wanted to discuss the billing procedures, and why I received no communication from them from September to December about my outstanding balance. My husband paid it and left it at that.
This review isn’t to keep you from going there, but to tell you about their informal billing process and how it is on you, meaning there is no communication about billing on the patient portal. So be diligent about billing and do not trust the patient portal as it seems they don’t really use it. Sign up for the e-statements, continue to ask them about billing, and ask for statements when you pay. I understand I could have done some things better, but as a business they also could have been more on top of things as well. My therapist’s new practice has automatic payments that charges after each section, which is lovely and it sends you a text receipt about it.
I never wanted to get out of paying for the services, I just wanted to discuss the miscommunication and have them take some blame for what happened instead of shuffling me off to a debt collection agency.
I’ve attached pictures of the email and what my patient portal looks like.

I was a client there about a year ago. Checked in from December 2020-April 2020. If I could give 0 stars, I would. The staff will taunt the children into altercations. Leading to restraints. Hurting the children and forcing them into seclusion. Forcing you to wake up and get out of your room and if not, in a restraint. Forcing you to go into your room and if not, in a restraint. So was needing to attend classes for my d.u.i. i had and called a couple places and were way to expensive. Came upon applecore and a man by the name of clay answered, right off the bat felt like he would be very nice just from the phone conversation i had with him thru his introduction. He is very knowledgeable and has the up most respect for others and understands everyone's situation. He is nothing but nice and kind. He makes you feel very welcome and allows you to be yourself and speak on how you feel and is a very good listener. He has the best prices than anyone else. I have nothing but the upmost respect for him as a person and his profession as a counselor. I definitely recommend him to anyone that has to do these classes. He is great at what he does and is a great person. He is kind, respectful, and just plain out awesome.

Kansas is ranked 17th nationwide in terms of addiction treatment affordability, with an average cost of addiction treatment of $56,618.
The costs of drug and alcohol rehab in Kansas vary widely and depend on several factors, including:
The costs of addiction treatment listed for cities and states are averages based on the cost of the treatment types listed above. These averages are high due to the cost of medical detoxification and residential inpatient rehab programs.
These numbers also reflect the raw cost of drug rehab, before any insurance coverage. The typical individual seeking addiction treatment can expect to pay much less for outpatient or intensive outpatient services than the averages listed below.
There are many ways to pay for drug rehab in Kansas. Most treatment centers accept cash or self-payment, as well as private health insurance.
